Public Exhibition of Planning Proposal for Hitchcocks Lane, Berry _ Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council Media Release

28 October 2020

Shoalhaven City Council is seeking community feedback on a proposal to rezone land south of Hitchcocks Lane in Berry to permit new housing development.

The land is on the western side of the Princes Highway, south of Hitchcocks Lane, adjacent to the Huntingdale Park residential estate. The proposal is now open for public comment with submissions accepted until 8 January 2021.

The Planning Proposal seeks to rezone approximately 11 hectares of rural land to the R2 Low Density Residential zone. The land is identified as a potential residential growth area in the Shoalhaven Growth Management Strategy (GMS) 2014.

The proposed changes to the local environmental plan (LEP) would allow subdivision of the land into up to approximately 150 new housing lots ranging in size from 700 m2 to 350 m2. Allowing for a limited amount of smaller lots is intended to encourage smaller homes to provide more housing choices and opportunities for the local community.

Shoalhaven Mayor Amanda Findley said, “Berry is a very popular place to visit and to move to, and state and local strategic plans identify this land as a potential location for housing growth. We also know the local community wants to protect the character qualities that make Berry such an attractive place.”

The proposed R2 Low Density Residential zone allows for mostly detached single houses. Providing a mix of lots sizes encourages housing variety, including two, three and four-bedroom homes to cater for a wide range of household needs and aspirations.

Council is also seeking feedback on a draft development control plan (DCP) that will support the proposed LEP changes and promote high quality design outcomes. The draft DCP focuses on promoting development that is compatible with Berry’s local character while also protecting the distinctive landscape views of the area.

The draft planning controls include the provision of landscape screening on the southern and eastern edges of the land, while also increasing landscaping opportunities within the future subdivision.

“The proposals are at a point where the Berry community can have their say on them before they are finalised and enable more detailed future residential subdivision applications.  Any feedback received will be considered by Council as part of the finalisation of the Planning Proposal and DCP,” said Clr Findley.

The proposal is open for comment via Council’s website getinvolved.shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au/projects/hitchcocks-lane.

Avian Artwork Sends a Meaningful Message - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council Media Release

23 October 2020

The amenities building at East Crescent, Culburra Beach now features a feathery new look thanks to a partnership between Shoalhaven City Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Lake Wollumboola Protection Association and Birdlife Shoalhaven. The organisations have united to highlight the importance of local migratory, nesting and water birds of the area.

South Coast based artist Sam Hall was commissioned to create the mural, made possible through the NSW Government Saving our Species program. The mural features a vibrant display of local and migratory birds and includes a sign recognising the Jerrinja people and their connection to county.

Shoalhaven Mayor Amanda Findley was thrilled to see the colourful mural highlighting the vulnerable bird species which live and pass through the area.

“Lake Wollumboola is a precious habitat for many local and migratory birds, many of which are threatened species. By creating awareness around the value of these species and their vulnerability, we hope to ensure these birds are protected now and into the future.

“Lake Wollumboola is recognised as an important area for local and migratory birds by Birdlife International, and is home to significant birds including Pied Oystercatcher, Little Terns, Bar-tailed Godwit, Intermediate Egret and Red-necked Avocets to name a few,” Mayor Findley said.

The mural complements the viewing platforms and signage previously installed by Shoalhaven City Council and National Parks and Wildlife Service which work to highlight local migratory, nesting, and water birds.

Shoalhaven City Council Clean Up at State Awards in Environmental Excellence -- Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council Media Release

22 October 2020

Shoalhaven City Council was the overall winner in the Towards Zero Net Emissions and Bushfire Recovery categories at the Local Government NSW 2020 Excellence in Environment Awards.

The State Awards, held on Tuesday 13 October via an online ceremony, highlighted outstanding environmental initiatives introduced by Local Governments in the past year.

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor Amanda Findley applauded Council staff for their commitment to introducing sustainable projects to protect the environment across the region.

“I commend Council staff for their hard work and dedication to environmental excellence”, Clr Findley said.

“For Shoalhaven City Council to win in both categories that it was nominated as a finalist in is a remarkable achievement and reflects on the outstanding initiatives introduced in the past year”, Clr Findley stated.

“These two projects demonstrate that even by taking small steps a local Council can make a big difference to the environment for generations to come”, Clr Findley said.

Council won in the Towards Net Zero Emissions Category for its adoption of a series of sustainable energy projects aimed at achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Some of these projects included trialing three fully electric vehicles in its fleet, installation of over 400 kW of solar panels across 10 sites, commencing a revolving energy fund, replacing 4,200 street lights with energy saving LEDs and supporting Repower Shoalhaven’s community energy solar farm.

Council also won in the Resource Recovery category for its adoption of a temporary bushfire demolition waste recovery facility aimed at preserving capacity of its only putrescible waste landfill.

Following the destruction of homes and properties in the bushfires of the 2019/2020 summer, any demolition waste that was unaffected by asbestos contamination was able to be recycled.

In the three months of operation, the facility processed nearly 18,000 tonnes of demolition waste from 313 homes, recovering a staggering 96% of the material for reuse.

The Shoalhaven City Council waste team are presented with the award from Mayor Amanda Findley and CEO Stephen Dunshea

For more information about the Awards visit the Local Government NSW’s website.
