Water Quality Issue Culburra Beach - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council is advising beachgoers to avoid ocean recreational activity in the Culburra Beach area due to the heavy rainfall that has occurred over the last few days and the forecast predicting that this will continue.

Residents are advised to not swim, surf, or beach fish between Crookhaven Lighthouse, in the north, and Bull Hole Lookout, in the south at Kinghorne due to the uncontrollable risk of pollution from stormwater and sewerage systems.  

Culburra Beach has received very high rainfall over the past few days and the local sewerage system has reached its storage capacity, resulting in unavoidable diluted sewage discharges. In addition, the flow in the Shoalhaven River has increased significantly which will impact the water quality near the entrance to the ocean at Culburra.

Council’s Environmental Services Department and Shoalhaven Water have been collaborating with the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and NSW Health in relation to the situation.  

Tidal current, wave motions and ocean swells will ensure that the pollution will disperse quickly once the rainfall event passes, however waterways are expected to be impacted for several days depending on the severity of the forecasted rainfall event.  

Staff are continuing to closely monitor the system and are currently monitoring the river flows and sewerage operations.

Given the age of the Master Plan, many projects have since been completed, or the priorities in the community may have changed, and therefore a review is warranted. L'Etape scheduled tree works Council crews are undertaking works in stages between October 2020 and March 2021 to prepare for the prestigious L’Étape Cycling event.  The L’Étape Cycling event will be held on 19-22 March 2021 with part of the route crossing through the Shoalhaven region. Tree management works will commence 23 October 2020 and are expected to be completed by 18 December 2020. Residents on Cambewarra Lookout Road, Tourist Road, and Kangaroo Valley Road are advised to travel before 7am or after 5pm, to and from their residence on the  scheduled Tree Work days in November. Avian Artwork Sends a Meaningful Message - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

The amenities building at East Crescent, Culburra Beach now features a feathery new look thanks to a partnership between Shoalhaven City Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Lake Wollumboola Protection Association and Birdlife Shoalhaven. The organisations have united to highlight the importance of local migratory, nesting and water birds of the area.

South Coast based artist Sam Hall was commissioned to create the mural, made possible through the NSW Government Saving our Species program. The mural features a vibrant display of local and migratory birds and includes a sign recognising the Jerrinja people and their connection to county. 

Shoalhaven Mayor Amanda Findley was thrilled to see the colourful mural highlighting the vulnerable bird species which live and pass through the area.

“Lake Wollumboola is a precious habitat for many local and migratory birds, many of which are threatened species. By creating awareness around the value of these species and their vulnerability, we hope to ensure these birds are protected now and into the future.

“Lake Wollumboola is recognised as an important area for local and migratory birds by Birdlife International, and is home to significant birds including Pied Oystercatcher, Little Terns, Bar-tailed Godwit, Intermediate Egret and Red-necked Avocets to name a few,” Mayor Findley said.

The mural complements the viewing platforms and signage previously installed by Shoalhaven City Council and National Parks and Wildlife Service which work to highlight local migratory, nesting, and water birds.
