Blacktown City Council - Media Release - Exhibition 'Terra InFirma"

28 February 2020

Blacktown Arts has announced the arrival of the

exhibition; Terra inFirma. at the Leo Kelly Blacktown arts

Centre.

The exhibition and performance program explores

expansion, voyages, discoveries and atrocities and

coincides with the 250th commemorative year of James

Cook’s arrival in Botany Bay.

Terra inFirma reveals knowledge about our region and wider

cultural histories.

Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said the

exhibition features work by some of Australia’s most exciting

indigenous artists.

“Terra inFirma invites discussion and debate around the

many stories of exploration, discovery and our shared

cultural heritage,” Mayor Bleasdale said.

Terra inFirma is an exciting three-part project which will take

place not only at the Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre, but

also in open spaces, laneways, schools and neighbourhoods

across the region.”

The year-long program examines how the arrival of James

Cook has impacted on the Dharug Peoples and communities

from our Asia Pacific region, now living in Blacktown. Central

to this program is the knowledge that this land was never

ceded.

Through personal journeys, intimate artworks and shared

experiences, this program presents James Cook’s arrival as

an act of transgression, offering perspectives beyond the

legacy of European expansion.

The first Terra inFirma exhibition in the series will be held

from 5 March – 23 May 2020.

Indigenous Australian artists include Dharug-Dharawal artist

Venessa Possum, presenting installation and video pieces

that explore murura (pathways), and the importance of water

as sustenance for generations of First Peoples; and Judy

Watson whose mix of video and painted works will reflect on

the atrocities and perpetrators of massacres from colonial

Australian history.

The exhibition will also feature First Nations artists hailing

from all around the globe, who now call Blacktown home.

The project’s second instalment, Terra inFirma 2 will run 11

June – 5 September, and will explore further themes in

rethinking our past and present.

Important Community Meeting Re Waste To Energy Incineration - Kerri Bradbury ' Whyilovemountdruitt' Face Book Page

IMPORTANT: Community Meeting on 1 April 7pm @ Erskine Park Community Hall. Find out the truth about Waste to Energy Incineration. Dispelling the myth that it is safe and clean.
From No Incinerator for Western Sydney:
***** IT IS VITAL FOR OUR COMMUNITY'S SAFETY and WELL-BEING that YOU DON'T MISS THIS! *****
7.00PM - 1ST APRIL 2020 AT ERSKINE PARK COMMUNITY CENTRE
We are so grateful for the support we receive from the National Toxics Network and Zero Waste Australia in fighting the incinerator proposals in our area and very much appreciate them including us in their National Speaking Tour.
The speakers are experts on the topics of WtE Incineration and Zero Waste. They travel all over the world speaking on the dangers of incineration to communities and the environment and how Zero Waste is not only possible but the way forward for our planet.
After the presentations, you will be welcome to ask questions and will walk away with a much deeper understanding of why we need to fight this technology, and what we should be doing with our waste instead.
******************************************************
Friends, we are coming to a town near you soon to dispel the myth of safe clean EU waste incineration and talk about the real Zero Waste Solutions for Australia's waste management crisis.
Our lifestyle choices alone will never fix the systemic failures of our linear model of production, consumption and disposal...its time to #Breakfreefromplastic#eliminatetoxics and build #zerowaste systems to drive the #circulareconomy.
The federal government (and most states) just want to keep business as usual for the fossil fuel and petrochemical plastics industries by burning our waste in deadly incinerators, cement kilns, paper mills or other combustion industries, here in Australia and in vulnerable countries in the Asia Pacific region. Financing such a climate polluting industry in the global south makes no sense while we face catastrophic climate change.
Countries all over the world are showing that Zero Waste Solutions not only work, are cheaper and more effective but are a critical part of addressing climate change.
Lets get Australia on the right path to Zero Waste and Circular Economy....will you join us?
