Shoalhaven City Council Taking Vandalism Seriously - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council Media Release

1 April 2021

Shoalhaven City Council has closed the liberty swing at Plantation Point Reserve, Vincentia due to substantial damage to the fence surrounding the swing.

Shoalhaven City Council's Director City Lifestyles, Jane Lewis, is disappointed that the vandalism will impact families visiting Plantation Point over Easter and the school holidays as the swing will need to remain closed until fence repairs can be completed.

"This recent act of vandalism follows five incidents of wire theft from sportsfields in the Shoalhaven," said Ms Lewis.

“The liberty swing fence at Plantation Point is a relatively new asset constructed at the end of 2020 thanks to a donation by Veolia Mulwaree Trust. It is frustrating that Council's efforts to provide great facilities to benefit our community can be damaged so readily by a destructive minority,” Ms Lewis said.

“We are determined to identify the culprits and are asking residents to assist us in protecting our community assets by reporting any suspicious activity at public facilities to NSW Police,” said Ms Lewis.

Liberty Swings are an Australian invention that enable people using wheelchairs to experience the fun and enjoyment of swinging.

"Inclusive play spaces are vital to help people of all ages and abilities to develop a wider sense of community. The improvements at Plantation Point are designed to create a real community space, providing an environment facilitating safe play whilst developing further social skills,” said Ms Lewis.

As well as upgrades to the playground, current works include a new amenities building with provisions for persons with a disability and accessible beach access from the Reserve to Barfleur Beach.

Beach Patrols in Place in the Shoalhaven During April School Holidays - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council Media Release

1 April 2021

Professional beach patrols will be in place at Shoalhaven beaches during the April NSW school holiday period from Friday, 2 April until Sunday, 18 April.

Shoalhaven City Council’s Director City Lifestyles Jane Lewis is reminding holiday makers and locals to swim between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches as the swimming season draws to a close.

“Our region boasts more than 100 stunning beaches, but if you plan to swim, we recommend choosing a beach that is patrolled. Patrols will be in place at Shoalhaven Heads, Crookhaven Heads, Warrain, Cudmirrah/Berrara, Narrawallee, North and South Mollymook beaches and Tilbury Cove.

“To make your next trip to the beach safer, make sure you read the safety signs, ask a lifeguard for safety advice and swim with a friend,” said Ms Lewis.

“We want everyone to be able to enjoy our glorious beaches, which is why our beach wheelchair service is also available during beach patrol season.

“Make sure you book ahead, there are ten beach wheelchairs available for adults and children free of charge, at seven beaches across the Shoalhaven,” said Ms Lewis.

To book a beach wheelchair.

Blacktown Arts - Future Proof, Blacktown City Council

FUTURE-PROOF

9 April – 8 May 2021

Emmanuel Asante, Maher Al Khoury, Mariam Abbas, Mahnaz Giahparvar, Payam Gouya, Mehrdad Mehraeen, Raneen Shamon and Najmeh Shoara

Settlement Services International in partnership with Blacktown Arts presents the Future-Proof showcase. The showcase is a unique interpretation from eight artists about the many facets of life reflecting on their personal backgrounds and experiences as recently arrived refugees in Australia. The Future-Proof showcase will be a month-long, multi-artform experience for audiences.

Future-Proof artists

Mariam Abbas

Growing up in a house of art, Mariam chooses paint instead of talk. For the visual artist, her work is a healing process and the place to go to in order to explore the emotional, the social and the political drawing on her unique insight.

Informed by the ruptures her family experienced as a result of war and displacement, Mariam explores ideas of “not belonging” and “being an outsider” allowing her to look at events and frame them in a way that brings her truth to the fore.

In 2019, Mariam won First prize for sculpture & other 3D work in the 22nd Annual Arts Exhibition at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre.

Maher Al Khoury

Art has long been in Maher’s world; a world where he can lose himself in the mastery of making visual objects that come to life from a place of beauty and creativity. When choosing a subject, Maher looks for the relationship between objects.

As a professional artist, he challenges himself to see things anew, to allow objects and subjects to take on identities that throw a different light on how they appear to be.
