Take 3 for the Sea this Summer - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council Media Release

6 January 2021

Shoalhaven City Council is proud to lend its support to the Take 3 For The Sea partnership this summer with several of our Local Surf Life Saving Clubs.

Take 3 for the Sea Shoalhaven recently received an EPA Local Litter Grant to develop and deliver its new online Surf Life Saving Clubs (SLSC) program throughout the 2020-21 surf lifesaving season.

The first of its kind in Australia, Take 3’s new online program aims to empower SLSCs and their communities to be part of the solution to plastic pollution washing up on their local beaches. The online program will deliver education about plastic pollution to SLSCs around Australia, with a focus on how plastic affects coastal and marine environments and provide accessible actions SLSCs can take to make a positive impact.

Mayor Amanda Findley was pleased to see the local Surf Clubs take up the message.

“The South Coast is the pilot region for the program, with Shoalhaven Heads, Sussex Inlet and Basin Community Nippers Clubs inducted in the first season, before its expansion to a state and national level.

“The message is simple and effective. The Take 3 message encourages people to take action and collect 3 pieces of rubbish when you leave anywhere in the outdoors.” Mayor Findley said.

To date, the Take 3 ‘hands-on’ SLSC program has been delivered to over 40 surf clubs around Australia and has seen major positive impacts as a result. They have cleaned 1.7M m2 of beach around Australia and removed 9,700 tonnes of rubbish from these sites.

Take 3’s education around litter includes an emphasis on litter reduction, by building awareness of avoiding single use plastic items.

“Cigarette butts continue to be one of the most littered items in Australia and there is a perception by some, that discarding a cigarette butt is ‘not really littering’, however butts contain toxins and plastics that are a threat to our environment and wildlife.

“Shoalhaven City Council Rangers are dedicated to help preserve our environment and they will be an active presence this summer. What you do with your rubbish can have a lasting impact, so please, dispose of it correctly. Don’t ruin your summer and receive an easily avoided fine.

“Part of the solution to protecting the world famous Shoalhaven coastline is literally in our hands, so don’t forget, next time you’re out and about, remember to Take 3 for the Sea” Mayor Findley said.
