New Fenced Off-Leash Dog Park Opens in Greenwell Point - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council Media Release

14 December 2020

Shoalhaven City Council recently completed construction of a fenced off-leash dog area in Greenwell Point.

The addition of the latest off-leash area in Greenwell Point was funded by Council and completed in early October 2020.

Shoalhaven City Council’s Mayor, Amanda Findley, said “With the addition of Greenwell Point there are now 24 off-leash dog areas in the Shoalhaven that residents can use to exercise their dogs”.

“Council encourages responsible pet ownership. A fenced open space gives dog owners confidence and peace of mind to upskill dogs in off leash behavior and control. The companion animals act is very clear, that dogs who are off leash must be able to be controlled. Noisy and exciting environments aren’t the places to teach these skills in early training”, Clr Findley said.

“In addition to these specific dog off-leash areas, dogs can be in public spaces on a leash. Councils have the unenviable task to balance the needs of pet owners, while understanding that one person’s furry friend can mean fear and anxiety to others. We also need to remember not to take dogs to prohibited areas such as shore bird nesting sites and National Parks. We have lots of space to share in the Shoalhaven. If we all do the right thing then we can enjoy what this region has to offer” said Clr Findley.

The off-leash dog park is fully fenced with a water tap. The Council funded project cost $35,000.

Of the 24 off-leash areas, there are 15 which are 24/7 off-leash areas and 9 timed dog off-leash areas.

The dog off-leash areas in the Shoalhaven are a combination of public open spaces including beaches, parks; and fenced areas to ensure our community and their pets have access to a wide range of dog off-leash facilities.

More information on Council’s Off-Leash and Prohibited Areas can be found on its website.
