International Volunteer Day 5th December 2020 - My thoughts

International Volunteer Day: 05/12/2020 | Bathurst Neighbourhood Centre

This is my personal thoughts on  anyone that volunteers, here or anywhere around the world, not seeking one single payment.

Volunteering to me, is a single choice we make to devote quality time and service in helping others, especially within our community or even all around the world. We do not seek to be rewarded financially, we just seek to do things to improve the people living around us, within our community.

Sometimes, we do not even know that when we speak to others within our community about improving services and/or requirements, that we are volunteering our own time advocating for a better community. Volunteering may also be helping others, by providing essential services, food and drinks to the poor and needy. Volunteers may be either employed or unemployed - seeking fulltime work. Volunteering is self-rewarding.

I have been volunteering my time as a community advocate, Led & organised a Hope Walk (prevention & Awareness of suicide around Nepean River, local radio DJ and Helping the elderly spruce up their gardens in a home Maintenance Plan. I have lead the Mount Druitt community achieve the return of 2 out of 3 vital bus services,  originally removed from service. I had chaired and being secretary to  local community meetings, participated in the NSW Transport Long Term Master Plan 2030, annual Blacktown City Council annual Public Transport Forums and was invited as a guest Speaker for Sydney Alliance at Bowman Hall 2010.

Now, my volunteering role has changed. I am still involved in community meetings and as a local radio DJ promoting Upbeat songs to make people feel upbeat.

So, for International Volunteer Day, this is part- self-rewarding for myself and is a significant understanding how each person that volunteers is important, in making our community and world a better place.  My personal reward is hearing and seeing other people being happy. Happiness is the cheapest medicine to make people feel well. There would be hundreds of people volunteering each day in each community doing their own thing. Then, there would be millions of people around the world giving up their time, like you and me. Enjoy this day.
