Shoalhaven City Council Calls for Donations to the Annual Mayor's Giving Box this Christmas - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council is encouraging residents to give to those in need by donating to the annual Mayor’s Giving Box this Christmas time.  

The annual charity campaign is a partnership between Shoalhaven City Council and Stockland Nowra Shopping Centre with donated presents and funds distributed to local charities in the Shoalhaven.  

This year the Mayor's Giving Box will support the following organisations Cullunghutti Aboriginal Child and Family Centre, Lyrebird Preschool, Clipper Road Children’s Centre and Salt Ministries. 

Donations to the Mayor’s Giving Box can be made online on Council’s website or in-person until Sunday13 December 2020.  

Unwrapped presents can be dropped off at the Mayor’s Giving Box, located between Lowes and Connor in the Stockland Nowra Shopping Centre. 

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Amanda Findley said: “Today I'm delighted to launch the annual Mayor’s Giving Box. This year has been a particularly difficult year for some in our community and I am calling on residents who can help to donate”.  

“Even a small contribution can help bring a little joy to a young child, family or an adult in need”, Clr Findley said.  

“I am pleased that Stockland Nowra continues to partner with Council”, Clr Findley stated.  

“I have chosen these local organisations as they support our most vulnerable within the Shoalhaven”, Clr Findley stated.

Blacktown City Council - Media Release - Blacktown City Council – Additional COVID-19 Measures

Blacktown City Council is implementing additional measures

in response to the global COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said, “Council 

has a duty of care to residents and staff to ensure all the 

necessary actions are being undertaken to slow the spread 

of the virus.

“In addition to the current closures, all Blacktown City Library 

branches and services will now be closed to the public.

“The Home Library Service however, which assists residents 

by reason of age, sickness or other incapacity, will continue 

to operate and Library users can access the Libraries’ online 

resources including eBooks and eMagazines as part of their 

Library membership,” Mayor Bleasdale said.

Blacktown City Council - Media Release -Blacktown City Council – Updated COVID-19 Response

Blacktown City Council is putting in place further measures to protect the health and wellbeing of 

residents and staff in response to the global COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic including cancelling 

all Council controlled events up until 30 June.

Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said, “We have a duty of care to residents and staff to 

take whatever action is necessary to slow the spread of the virus.

“Based on overseas lessons the most effective way to slow the infection rate is by ‘social 

distancing’ which includes avoiding crowds, meetings and gatherings, staying at home if you have 

symptoms of cold or flu, working from home, and putting one-to-two metres ‘space’ between people 

where possible.

“To this end, Council has cancelled or postponed all non-essential events, festivals, gatherings, 

meetings and many programs under its control until 30 June.

“Unfortunately, this includes the incredibly popular Blacktown Festival and Medieval Fayre, our 

Citizenship Ceremonies and Community Forums program, but in these times the health and safety 

of our residents and the staff who run those events must be Council’s number one priority.

“Council is also subject to government regulations that ban outdoor gatherings and events of more 

than 500 people and limit indoor gatherings and venues to a maximum of 100 people,” Mayor 

Bleasdale said.

Blacktown City Council is embarking on a series of measures

and actions in the interests of the health and wellbeing of 

residents in response to the global COVID-19 (coronavirus) 

pandemic.

Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said; “Council 

has a duty of care to the community and our staff and we are 

fully committed to take whatever action we can to slow the 

spread of the virus in our region.

“Based on the lessons we've learned from overseas, we 

must act quickly and decisively, or many lives will be lost.

“We need to slow the infection rate and the most effective 

approach is through ‘social distancing’ which includes 

avoiding crowds, meetings and gatherings, staying home if 

you are sick, working from home, giving people ‘space’ and 

most importantly practising good personal hygiene.

“Under this approach, the pandemic will last longer, but 

health outcomes will be far better.

“While Government restrictions apply to public gatherings of 

500 or more people, Council has decided to recommend that 

all non-essential large gatherings, meetings and events in 

Blacktown City be cancelled or postponed.

“Council will take the lead in this by cancelling or postponing 

all non-essential gatherings, events and meetings that come 

under Council control,” Mayor Bleasdale said.

Council will cancel the Citizenship ceremony scheduled for 

Thursday 19 March in Bowman Hall in Blacktown and 

postpone the Community Forum planned for Marsden Park 

this Saturday, 21^st March in the Elara estate.

“While halting these events is a big disappointment for 

residents and Council alike, the health and wellbeing of the 

community must be our number one priority during these 

difficult times,” Mayor Bleasdale said.

The Community Forum had been planned to spotlight major 

transport, health and education infrastructure deficiencies 

that have impacted Marsden Park and surrounding suburbs.

“While we are totally behind the residents with their justified 

concerns it would be irresponsible for Council to go ahead 

with a large public gathering at this time,” Mayor Bleasdale 

said.

Council has also cancelled the Blacktown Night Markets 

Friday 27^th March, the Seven Hills Festival Saturday 28 

March and the ‘design-a-park’ meeting Saturday 21 March at 

the corner of Fourth avenue and Prince Street, Blacktown.

Mayor Bleasdale is recommending that all large, non-

essential gatherings, events and meetings should be 

cancelled or postponed.

“We will be cancelling or postponing all bookings for 

Bowman Hall for the next two months.

“We are also urging residents and businesses to adopt 

‘social distancing’ in their day-to-day activities. That is, make 

some space in restaurants, shops and entrainment venues, 

avoid crowds and, where possible, crowded public 

transport.”  

Blacktown City Council is also taking preventative measures 

within Council operations to safeguard staff and the general 

public.

Council staff will be encouraged, where practicable, to work 

from home and non-essential meetings will be cancelled or 

held online or by phone.

Council staff are being told that they should not attend work 

and seek immediate medical advice if they have symptoms 

of cold or flu. 

“We advise all businesses, where possible, to adopt similar 

practices,” Mayor Bleasdale said.

Council will embark on an extensive public health campaign 

at all its venues, offices, on its website and on social media 

emphasising the importance of personal hygiene and 

advising people of the actions they should take to protect 

themselves and to help slow the spread of the virus.

Blacktown City Council - Media Release - Help Design Your New Park In Blacktown

Residents are invited to have their say in the design of a park

in Blacktown.

The community engagement event is being held on 

Saturday 21 March between 10 am and 12 pm in the reserve

at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Prince Street, 

Blacktown, with residents being asked for their input into the 

redesign and upgrade of the park.

Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM will be there 

along with council staff and is encouraging residents to have 

their say on the upgrade.

“Council has heard the community’s calls for the park on the 

corner of Fourth Avenue and Prince Street Blacktown to be 

improved and we want to design this park with the local 

community.

“Understanding what the community would like is important 

to help guide Council and ensure the redeveloped park is 

exactly what residents want,” Mayor Bleasdale said.

“I encourage residents to meet staff members and discuss 

what they would like to see featured in the upgrade. 

Understanding the community’s wants and needs is a vital 

part in the design process.”

The event will allow community members the opportunity to 

directly provide their preferences for the upgrade through the 

use of interactive display boards and discussions with 

Council and the designers.

Blacktown City Council - Media Release - Outdoor Fun For Schofields Residents At New Park

9 March 2020

Schofield residents will soon have a whole new park to enjoy.

Work is expected to be completed by July on the $840,600 

park at the corner of Oallen Place and Bannaby Crescent, 

Schofields.

Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said, “Council is 

committed to providing the best possible recreation facilities 

for our residents in more than 400 parks and 1000 reserves 

across the City.

“A feature of this park will be the retention of a heritage-

listed oak tree as the focal point of the new facilities. There 

will be seating, paths and shade, included to make the park 

as comfortable and accessible to as many people in the 

community as possible.”

Additional native trees, grasses and shrubs are being 

planted within the park along the creek line to provide a 

natural habitat for the native bird and animal population.

The new park will include a swing set with an inclusive net 

swing, in-ground trampolines, main fort including viewing 

platforms and slide, tee-pee fort with slide and net bridge to 

large net climbing structure and spinner.

Blacktown City Council - Media Release - Exhibition 'Terra InFirma"

Blacktown Arts has announced the arrival of the

exhibition; Terra inFirma. at the Leo Kelly Blacktown arts

Centre.

The exhibition and performance program explores 

expansion, voyages, discoveries and atrocities and 

coincides with the 250th commemorative year of James 

Cook’s arrival in Botany Bay.

Terra inFirma reveals knowledge about our region and wider 

cultural histories.

Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said the 

exhibition features work by some of Australia’s most exciting 

indigenous artists.

“Terra inFirma invites discussion and debate around the 

many stories of exploration, discovery and our shared 

cultural heritage,” Mayor Bleasdale said.

“Terra inFirma is an exciting three-part project which will take 

place not only at the Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre, but 

also in open spaces, laneways, schools and neighbourhoods 

across the region.”

The year-long program examines how the arrival of James 

Cook has impacted on the Dharug Peoples and communities 

from our Asia Pacific region, now living in Blacktown. Central 

to this program is the knowledge that this land was never 

ceded.

Through personal journeys, intimate artworks and shared 

experiences, this program presents James Cook’s arrival as 

an act of transgression, offering perspectives beyond the 

legacy of European expansion.

The first Terra inFirma exhibition in the series will be held 

from 5 March – 23 May 2020.

Indigenous Australian artists include Dharug-Dharawal artist 

Venessa Possum, presenting installation and video pieces 

that explore murura (pathways), and the importance of water 

as sustenance for generations of First Peoples; and Judy 

Watson whose mix of video and painted works will reflect on 

the atrocities and perpetrators of massacres from colonial 

Australian history.

The exhibition will also feature First Nations artists hailing 

from all around the globe, who now call Blacktown home.

The project’s second instalment, Terra inFirma 2 will run 11 

June – 5 September, and will explore further themes in 

rethinking our past and present.
