Is your property prepared for this bush fire season? - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

With the commencement of bush fire season on September 1, now is the time to get your property prepared for bush fire. Garden waste disposal vouchers issued to Shoalhaven City Council ratepayers can help you to reduce the fuel load of your property, to help ensure you’re prepared this bush fire season.

Mayor Amanda Findley encouraged residents to take steps now to prepare for the event of a bush fire. “By reducing the fuel load around your property, you can help protect your home in the event of a bush fire.

“Part of your preparation should include what you can do around the garden, such as keeping lawns and gardens well maintained; cleaning up fallen leaves, twigs and debris around property; cutting back trees and shrubs overhanging buildings and cleaning your gutters of leaves and twigs.

“Take the RFS Get Ready weekend opportunity on September 19-20 to reduce the fuel load at your property and lessen the ignition risk and vulnerability of your property from a bush fire or ember attack.

“Numerous Rural Fire Service Brigades throughout the Shoalhaven are taking part in the Get Ready Weekend, and you can find info

rmation about how to prepare for this bushfire season on the NSW Rural Fire Service website.

“All ratepayers received three free garden waste disposal vouchers for 2020-21, in addition to the 2 free household waste vouchers. I strongly encourage you to use these garden waste vouchers to clean up your property and if you have any 2019-20 household waste disposal vouchers, don’t forget to use them before their extended expiry date of 30 September 2020,” Mayor Findley said.

Garden waste vouchers can be redeemed at all Council Recycling and Waste Depots and Council’s Green and Bulky Collection Service. To find out what is accepted as garden waste see Council’s Garden Waste Collection page.

Help for Flood Affected in Bushfire Impacted Areas - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council has partnered with 'GIVIT' to ensure those impacted by the recent floods in bushfire impacted areas obtain the essential items and services they need.

GIVIT - Goods For Good Causes is an online, not-for-profit that coordinates the distribution of quality donated goods and services by connecting and inspiring an online network of givers.

Mayor Amanda Findley said, “Our hearts go out to those who have endured the fires and are now dealing with floodwaters and further damage to their properties.

“Council has been contacted by numerous people who want to help those impacted by the recent flooding. GIVIT is a great way to for those in need to access items and services that have been donated,” said Clr Findley.

Donated items such as tarps, tents, bedding, fans, dehumidifiers, and more can be accessed by logging details on the GIVIT website. To access donated support through GIVIT, you must first connect with a support organisation that is able to assess your needs. To find support organisations in your area that are already registered to use GIVIT, please go to givit.org.au/need-help/individuals.

If you have been impacted by the floods and are seeking assistance, please call Council's Recovery Hotline on 02 4429 5888. 

If you were directly impacted by the bushfires or floods, and need financial assistance, you can apply for a payment from the Shoalhaven City Council’s Mayor's Relief Fund by completing the application form available on Council’s website. Applications will be considered on a needs basis until the funds run out. 

Shoalhaven residents who are eligible for assistance from the Shoalhaven Mayor’s Relief Fund include full-time residents in the Shoalhaven (including renters), and whose home, infrastructure or outbuildings have been damaged or destroyed and tradespeople, including apprentices, who have had vehicles, equipment or tools damaged or destroyed.  

If you would like to donate, access the Shoalhaven City Council’s Mayor’s Relief Fund online through the Give Now website, or by EFT via Shoalhaven City Council.

John Fisher is one of 13 people who recently received a generator through GIVIT, following the fire damage to his property in Illaroo on 4 January.

Let’s ‘Get Ready’ Shoalhaven - Live Webinar to Equip Residents for Next Fire Season

Shoalhaven City Council, is partnering with the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and NSW Police, to host three City-wide ‘Recovery into Readiness’ community meetings (webinars). 

The one-hour interactive webinars can be viewed live on Wednesday 26 August at 1pm, 4pm, and 7pm. The webinars will also be recorded and published on Council’s Website. 

The virtual community meetings will host a panel of presenters to address matters of importance based on the NSW Government ‘Get Ready’ campaign and to answer questions about emergency and bushfire readiness. 

Local Emergency Officers will focus on aspects of community order, response to warnings, and evacuation. The RFS will address community preparedness including preparing property, important items such as transistor radios, torches and recommended media Apps to download. 

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Amanda Findley said, “In support of the NSW Government Get Ready Campaign these virtual community meetings and panel are mindful that many of our community have heightened sensitivity to this subject, with many residents still in recovery from our most recent fire season.” 

“The live webinars are an opportunity for residents and ratepayers to proactively prepare themselves and their families for the next emergency or fire season. Council also updates emergency planning information on Shoalhaven City Council’s website year-round, to ensure community access to the latest information.” said Clr Findley.

Generating Hope for Bushfire Impacted - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Thirteen people impacted by the bushfires will receive generators supplied by not-for-profit organisation GIVIT and transported free of charge by Air CL Transport. 

The recipients of the generators are primary producers or small business owners who have been identified by the Local Land Services Small Farms Network. 

GIVIT, in conjunction with the NSW Joint Recovery Task Force, is linking requests for assistance for bushfire affected families and communities from trusted organisations, with the donations of money, goods and services.  

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor Amanda Findley met the Air CL Transport delivery to personally thank the Taren Point-based transport company for donating the transport of donated goods over two days to the Victorian border, including the four pallets of generators to the Shoalhaven. 

“We are grateful to GIVIT and Air CL Transport for their support, as there are still so many needs even though it is now six months since the fires,” said Clr Findley.  

“It isn’t too late for those who have been impacted by the bushfires to apply for assistance from the Mayor's Relief Fund and it isn’t too late to donate to the fund. If you are in need, submit the application form that is on Council’s website, or call our friendly customer service staff for assistance.” 

“We recognise that the bushfire recovery process is long and ongoing for many fire-affected families and communities in our region and many are now facing new challenges and needs that come with the colder winter months,” she said. 

Caroline Odgers, GIVIT's Regional Manager ACT/South East NSW said, “We also have a small delivery of generators being distributed through SaltCare who are supporting people as they rebuild. All purchases are made locally when possible and support the growth of local business in affected regions.”

Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release - Shoalhaven City Council Clarification of Bushfire Recovery Scope of Works

Shoalhaven City Council would like to address recent media statements regarding the amount of cleared properties in fire impacted areas of the Shoalhaven. 

Property numbers cleaned do not provide a clear guide of bushfire recovery progress, with each property having different circumstances and recovery measures in place. 

The bushfire recovery scope of works was determined by the State contractor Laing O’Rourke, on behalf of NSW Public Works.   

A total of 916 bushfire affected properties registered for clean-up with Laing O'Rourke, and each of those properties were visited and assessed by the state contractor and NSW Public Works.  424 of those 916 registered were deemed to be in scope and eligible for clean-up works to be undertaken.  

Council is pleased to advise that of the 424 eligible properties, 392 have now been cleaned to date, with 32 properties remaining. 

Council, with assistance from Laing O’Rourke and Service NSW, contacted a further 42 property owners regarding registration for clean-up, with 10 of which unable to be contacted despite considerable measures to make contact. 

Of the 32 properties contacted, Council have been advised from property owners that the property owner will either contact Service NSW and register, have made their own arrangements with their insurance company, are cleaning it themselves, or are choosing to not commence with the clean-up as yet. Council have made it clear to property owners to register for the service while it is still on offer. 

In terms of waste removal from bushfire affected properties, a dedicated Bushfire Waste Recycling Centre was set up at West Nowra Waste Depot to handle the non-contaminated waste received from property cleaning. The Centre has received approximately 18,000 tonnes of non-contaminated waste, with over 93% reprocessed as recyclable material. The remaining 250 tonnes of non-contaminated waste was put into landfill. The recycling program was highly successful, and as the demand for the centre has now decreased significantly, the Centre was decommissioned last week with any further waste received to be processed at the waste depot. 

Council have undertaken significant efforts to ensure all Shoalhaven fire impacted properties register with Service NSW to ensure each property owner has access to the support and resources they need to move through the recovery process.

2019-2020 Bush Fire Inquiry - Hon. Shelley Hancock MP For Southcoast

The NSW Government has commissioned an independent expert 

inquiry into the 2019-20 bushfire season to provide input ahead of

the next bushfire season.

The Inquiry welcomes submissions from bushfire affectedresidents, emergency and support personnel, organisations and the general public.

Everyone is encouraged to share their experience and tell their story to inform the Inquiry’s work.

The Inquiry will endeavour to travel to bushfire affected 

communities to meet with and hear directly from people who have 

been affected. The Inquiry will inform local communities ahead of all 

visits to ensure it reaches as many people as possible. The schedule 

for community visits will be posted on the bush fire inquiry site as 

soon as visits are confirmed.

Your response and feedback will help to inform the Inquiry's report. If you would like to, please refer to the Inquiry's Terms of Reference.
