A Message for All Employers: Free Suicide Prevention Training - Lifeline South Coast

I received this message from the Shoalhaven Suicide Prevention & Awareness Network - LifeLine South Coast are Offering this to Employers - Something to consider....

Hi there,

I am writing today to let you know about a suicide prevention training opportunity that I thought might be of interest to your organisation:

Seeking Expressions of Interest

Lifeline South Coast is working to reduce suicide by connecting with people in their workplaces to deliver skills and knowledge around suicide and what can be done to keep themselves and others safe. As part of this work, Lifeline South Coast is currently being funded by NSW Health to deliver suicide prevention training, known as Gatekeeper training, at no cost.

Eligibility Requirements

The target cohort for this training is men aged 45 years and older, acknowledging that 75% of those who take their own life are male, and that of working age men (20 - 69), those at the highest risk of dying by suicide are men aged 45+. Contextualized towards this target cohort, NSW Health funded places for Gatekeeper training are available to those living and working within the South Coast region, and who are:

  • Men aged 45-years and older; or
  • Individuals working with men in this age group; or
  • Workplaces with high numbers of men 45-years and over.

Gatekeeper Training

As the leading cause of death amongst Australians between the ages of 15 and 44, suicide has a devastating impact on individuals, families, workplaces, and entire communities. Community awareness, connections, and resilience is critical to suicide prevention, recognising the important role of the wider population in building mentally healthy communities that are well-networked and resourceful. Employers have a responsibility to incorporate suicide prevention strategies into their employee health and wellbeing initiatives. Gatekeeper training supports organisations to meet this duty of care requirement free of cost, equipping workers with the knowledge and skills required to identify suicide warning signs, facilitate supportive conversations, and refer their colleagues to appropriate services and resources. Such training has a cumulative effect – upskilling employees, supporting those at risk of suicide, and building a healthier, happier, and more resilient workplace as a result.

Training Delivery

Depending on the needs of your organisation, we have some flexibility surrounding training options, which can be delivered either face-to-face or virtually, and over one day or across multiple days.

For more information or to express your interest, please email us at training@llsc.org.au

All the best,

QPR Suicide Awareness training - Virtual Classroom! Zoom In! Lifeline South Coast

Did you know that in Australia we lose 8 people to suicide every day?

And 6 of them are men.

We all have a role to play in preventing suicide

We all need to do our part in helping to prevent suicide.

Gatekeepers are individuals who are likely to come into contact with people at risk of suicide.

Gatekeeper training aims to equip those individuals with the skills to recognise and respond appropriately to people at risk of suicide and assist them to seek appropriate help.

QPR strands for Question, Persuade, and Refer – the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.

Just as people trained in CPR help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognise the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade and refer (QPR) someone to help.

The QPR training course will provide you with:

  • Knowledge and skills to identify warning signs that someone may be suicidal
  • Confidence to talk to them about suicidal thoughts
  • Connect them with professional care

As many of you know, our face to face training sessions have needed to be rescheduled due to the Covid-19 restrictions, and Lifeline South Coast is proud to be able to deliver this face to face session via Virtual Classroom delivery!

I want to invite you to register for this session that will be held on Fri 12th June at 10am – 12.30pm

We will be utilising the Zoom platform (free to install and to use, available for PC, tablet or phone) but places are limited to only 14, so please register as soon as you can.

I will post out the QPR work book and some resources that you would have received if attending at the face to face session.

Please register on our website using this link:
