NSW Councils apply for rate increases
Four councils across NSW have applied to IPART for a special variation to increase their income from rates above the rate peg.
Large increases were sought by Central Coast Council, Hunter’s Hill Council and Snowy Valleys Council.
IPART has set the rate peg for 2022-23 at 0.7% for councils with zero and below population growth. The rate peg is the maximum percentage amount by which a council can increase its income from rates.
Community members can make submissions on the proposed rate increases until 7 March.
Improving energy efficiency and saving money
You may not be aware but the long-running Energy Saving Scheme administered by IPART can provide households and small businesses with energy efficiency upgrades such as replacing downlights with LEDs.
To participate you need to contact one of the businesses accredited under the scheme.
The ESS also assists consumers to achieve energy savings by incentivising retailers to sell energy efficient appliances. The types of appliances include televisions, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and fridges.

City Development Director, James Ruprai, Announced - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council announces the appointment of James Ruprai to the role of Director, City Development.
Mr Ruprai comes to Shoalhaven having departed his role as the Group Executive, Customer Engagement and Planning Services at Sunshine Coast Council in Queensland.
Mayor, Amanda Findley said, “I am extremely pleased to announce the appointment of James Ruprai to the position of Director, City Development as incoming Director to replace the retiring Phil Costello.”
“Mr Ruprai joins us with a wealth of experience in planning, compliance and environmental services at councils in both Queensland and New South Wales, having previously worked for the Sydney Olympic Park Authority, as well as his time in an executive planning role with one of Australia’s largest local governments.”
“He is most pleased to relocate back to NSW and to the Shoalhaven. I look forward to working closely with James on our important current and future city development projects for our community,” Mayor Findley.
Under James’ leadership, the City Development Directorate is responsible for Development Assessments, Certification, Building Assessments and Compliance. The Directorate is also responsible for Ranger Services, Animal Management, Environmental Services (Policy, Regulation, Compliance, Weeds), Natural Areas (Waterways, Beaches, Bushland) and the Ulladulla Service Centre.
James holds tertiary qualifications appropriate for the position as well as an MBA. He is also a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. James has commenced with Council on 14 February 2022.

Mechanical intervention at the entrance of Tabourie Lake and Shoalhaven Heads - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Recent high rainfalls and severe weather from the current east coast low has resulted in Tabourie Lake and the Shoalhaven Heads Entrance requiring pre-emptive mechanical intervention. This work is required to reduce flooding risk.
The water level at Tabourie Lake, at 4:00pm on 1/03/2022, is below the trigger level of 1.30m ADH. In accordance with the Tabourie Lake Entrance Management Policy, and the forecasted rainfall, Council will open the Tabourie Lake entrance to the sea this afternoon, Tuesday 1 March 2022.
The water level at Shoalhaven Heads is currently below the trigger levels. In accordance with the Shoalhaven River Entrance Management Policy, and with approval sought by NSW Crown Land, Council is currently undertaking preparatory works with plans to open the Shoalhaven Heads entrance to the sea tomorrow morning, Wednesday 2 March 2022. Preparatory works are being undertaken now as hazardous surf conditions are forecast for the time the trigger level is predicted to be reached, making works unsafe.
Council has worked and continues to work collaboratively with state government agencies to ensure the entrance is open in a timely and safe manner.
People are requested to stay outside the work area and keep away from the edges of the dug channel and eroding banks following opening as these areas are very unstable and unsafe.
Council is reminding residents that anyone needing assistance should contact the SES on 132 500.

Road Closure Forest Road - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release
1 March 2022
Forest Road, Comberton will close between the Princes Highway and Callala Beach Road from Tuesday evening (1 March 2022) due to safety concerns for motorists.
Traffic will be diverted onto Coonemia Road via Greenwell Point Road to Kalandar Street.
Motorists travelling from Callala Beach, Callala Bay and Currarong are advised to expect delays and plan their journey ahead of time as the detour route is under construction.
With further storm activity predicted in the coming days, residents are advised to drive to the conditions and avoid unnecessary travel through the areas above.
