NSW Councils apply for rate increases

 

Four councils across NSW have applied to IPART for a special variation to increase their income from rates above the rate peg.  

Large increases were sought by Central Coast Council, Hunter’s Hill Council and Snowy Valleys Council.

IPART has set the rate peg for 2022-23 at 0.7% for councils with zero and below population growth. The rate peg is the maximum percentage amount by which a council can increase its income from rates.

Community members can make submissions on the proposed rate increases until 7 March.

Improving energy efficiency and saving money

 

You may not be aware but the long-running Energy Saving Scheme administered by IPART can provide households and small businesses with energy efficiency upgrades such as replacing downlights with LEDs.

To participate you need to contact one of the businesses accredited under the scheme.

The ESS also assists consumers to achieve energy savings by incentivising retailers to sell energy efficient appliances. The types of appliances include televisions, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and fridges.

IPART Chair Awarded

 

Our Chair Carmel Donnelly was awarded the Public Service Medal in the Australia Day Awards.

Her medal is for outstanding public service to regulatory reforms in New South Wales.

It’s well deserved recognition of her leadership in implementing reform, most recently as CEO of the State Insurance Regulatory Authority.

Most of us and the rest of the people of NSW have benefited from her work including holding our workers compensation insurer to account and reduced insurance premiums for our green slips.

 

 

Peak Demand Reduction Scheme

 

The Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS) was established in September 2021 to incentivise activities that reduce peak demand for electricity in NSW households and businesses.

High demand puts significant pressure on the electricity system which can lead to price spikes, or in the worst situations, blackouts.

The scheme – which is administered by IPART - encourages consumers and businesses to be more conscious of peak electricity use by creating incentives to cut their energy usage at peak times during summer.

Fire and Rescue NSW

 

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) provides fire, rescue and hazmat services in cities and towns across NSW.

FRNSW may charge for some of its services, such as false alarm call-outs to automatic fire alarm systems and attendance at hazmat incidents. 

We’re reviewing the services FRNSW may charge for, and making recommendations on these charges, including prices to apply from 1 September 2022.

Submissions on our draft recommendations close 8 February.

Review of electricity network operators’ licences

 

We’re conducting a review of the licence conditions for electricity network operators in NSW namely Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Essential Energy.

It’s a technical review which is limited in scope. Submissions on the draft report close 11 February.
