Mechanical intervention at the entrance of Tabourie Lake - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

The high tides and strong winds experienced over the weekend resulted in the entrance to Tabourie Lake closing. Although only 2 mm of rainfall has been observed in the catchment during the past 48 hours, the lake level increased from 1.07 m AHD to 1.35 m AHD. The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted a 50 per cent chance of more than 15 – 25 mm of rainfall in the catchment on Wednesday and a 50 per cent chance of more than 25 – 50 mm to fall on Thursday.

The water level at Tabourie Lake, at 11:45 am on 4 April 2022, was above the trigger level of 1.30 m AHD. In accordance with the Tabourie Lake Entrance Management Policy, and subject to the safety of the machinery operators, Council opened the entrance on the afternoon of 4 April 2022.

Council has worked and continues to work collaboratively with State Government Agencies to ensure the entrance was opened in a timely and safe manner. 

People are requested to keep away from the edges of the dug channel and eroding banks as these areas are very unstable and unsafe. It is expected that the low-lying areas around the lake will be subject to flooding until the water recedes, and people should put in place their flood emergency plan.

Council is reminding residents that anyone needing flood assistance should contact the SES on 132 500.

Mechanical intervention at the entrance of Tabourie Lake and Shoalhaven Heads - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Recent high rainfalls and severe weather from the current east coast low has resulted in Tabourie Lake and the Shoalhaven Heads Entrance requiring pre-emptive mechanical intervention.  This work is required to reduce flooding risk. 

The water level at Tabourie Lake, at 4:00pm on 1/03/2022, is below the trigger level of 1.30m ADH. In accordance with the Tabourie Lake Entrance Management Policy, and the forecasted rainfall, Council will open the Tabourie Lake entrance to the sea this afternoon, Tuesday 1 March 2022. 

The water level at Shoalhaven Heads is currently below the trigger levels. In accordance with the Shoalhaven River Entrance Management Policy, and with approval sought by NSW Crown Land, Council is currently undertaking preparatory works with plans to open the Shoalhaven Heads entrance to the sea tomorrow morning, Wednesday 2 March 2022. Preparatory works are being undertaken now as hazardous surf conditions are forecast for the time the trigger level is predicted to be reached, making works unsafe.

Mechanical Opening Lake Tabourie - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council will be opening Lake Tabourie to the sea this afternoon, 21 June 2021. The water level in Lake Tabourie has reached a height of 1.21m, triggering the need to mechanically open the lake in accordance with the Tabourie Lake Entrance Management Policy.

The community are requested to stay outside of the work area and keep away from the edges of the dug channel and eroding banks following the opening, as these areas can be very unstable and unsafe.
