Bay & Basin Public Transport 'Catch a Bus Day' Why is it needed?

I am at the beginning stages of organising a 'Bay & Basin Public Transport 'Catch a bus Day". The inspiration has come from the production of 9 QuickTrips and Scenic Trips Click here for the 9th one and - click at the end of the post for others

Ok. What is this all about? It is all about getting more people's bums on bus seats within the Bay & Basin area and beyond.

Why?

The 'basic' reason why, is the patronage on our local buses is so low, we are lucky to actually have these bus services provided by The NSW Government and serviced by local Bus Operators like Nowra Coaches and Shoal Buses.

I was appalled coming from an urban area where patronage was not an issue, it was just the bus service itself was in high demand and in peak times, fully seated.

So why in our regions there isn't great patronage for these services? Simply, it is based on years and years of governments focussing on urban bus routes and making regions secondary, from my understanding.

Here the Green Party would support me in changing the focus of private cars travelling to public transport travelling/ The Liberal Party would support me in spending on expansive promotional material on all levels of media, to make people catch buses of their own choice. 'Things like Billboards with the Shoalhaven Bus Network Map' and links to the Bus Operators' timetables/contact details.-, along each way of the Princess Highway. We don't even have Shoalhaven Tourism promote buses in their flyers and books.-, because as i was basically told, 'It is too much information to provide.'

 We do promote the purchasing of vehicles but at the end of the day, we do not promote the Public Transport Bus Services, which is sad. We are behind the times here. people leave their cars at home, there is a great ecological advantage, to the environment as well as economic advantage to people as they are spending less on fuel and less wear and tear on their vehicle.

The Liberal Party would agree that this in itself creates a stronger economy once money is spent on trips

So how do we solve this problem? Simply, we run a local campaign of awareness for Public Transport Buses by calling it ' Bay & Basin Public Transport Catch a Bus Day!'

Well, it is what it says, 'Catch a Bus' - I have suggested that on Tuesday 19th March 2024, with the support of Nowra Coaches/, we will organise the community to catch  102X from all Bay Basin villages, starting from Basin View right through to Woollamia and then continuing to Th Hon. Liza Butler's Office in Plunket Street, Nowra. Refreshments will be provided and there will be a few speeches from John Svoboda, Liza Butler, May & Deputy May and open to  to other Councillors to seek on it as well

Public Transport recognised days:

• 29th February 2020, Luxembourg became the first country in the world to make all public transport free to use.
• 1st Saturday in March - International Free Public Transport Day is celebrated.
• 18th March is Bus Driver /Appreciation Day started to commemorate a free bus line, Blaise Pascal's Carrosses à cinq sols in Paris, 1662.
• 1st October 2022, Malta became the 2nd country in the world to make all public transport free to use.
• 10th November - World Public Transport Day. Transport to raise awareness of the negative environmental effects of increasing traffic density and to motivate people to use public transportation and conserve fuel.
• 24th November -  World Sustainable Day. Transport is vital for promoting connectivity, trade, economic growth and employment. Yet it is also implicated as a significant source of green-house gas emissions. Resolving these trade-offs is essential to achieving sustainable transport and, through that, sustainable development.

 Outcome:

Even to see a slight increase in patronage over the months. More people talking about it and an expansion of this event to all over the Shoalhaven Bus Network and the promotion of this event to be 2025 taken up ny NSW Transport. Finally by 2026, to be recognized by the United Nations as hopefully, an International Free-Fare Public Transport Catch a Bus Day!

Bay & Basin Buses - Quick Trip 8 -104 HomeCo, Vincentia Village to Hyams Beach Village

This is what I would call the short holiday trip bus service. If you plan your day properly, you could pick up the Bus at HomeCo, Vincentia arrive @ Hyams Beach Village, enjoy a leisurely time Chinamans Beach and/or Hyams Beach with your family, friends or even take time out for yourself. You may organise it to catch the return service to HomeCo, Vincentia.

You may stroll along the beach, swim, sunbake, relax and even have lunch at a popular restaurant. picnic, have a barbeque and relax.

If you live in the Villages along the Nowra Coaches 102x/102 bus service: Woolamia, Huskisson, Vincentia, Old Erowal Bay, Worrowing Heights, Sanctuary Point, St Georges Basin and Basin View, you will be able to connect at Homeco  Bus stop to connect to the Nowra Coaches 104 Bus Service to Hyams Beach.

Here we are the new Nowra Coaches signs to be placed on major bus stops in the Bay & Basin area. The First one is Bus Stop Number 2540347, Paradise Beach Road (Opposite Sanctuary Point Public School).

It's slightly angled, my first time at it. Thank you Nowra Coaches for offering me to assist the bus commuters with displaying important local bus information, inclusive of East Nowra services.

How does it look? More bus stops to be updated. Keep an eye out for them. Just look at the signpost.

The good information provided is automatic information for Bus timetables and Trip Planner via a QR Code supplied.. Just have your mobile phone with you!

Bay & Basin Buses - Quick Trip 7 - 104 Vincentia HomeCo. to Erowal Bay

So, this trip rather shorter 'Quick Trip' -  from HomeCo, Vincentia to Erowal Bay (Not Old Erowal Bay), compared to the previous 'Scenic Trip 6' from Homeco, Vincentia to Sussex Inlet villages via  Tomerong Village.

The village of Erowal Bay lies on the banks of East of the St Georges Basin, Opposite to Sanctuary Point and the entrance to Tomerong Creek,

It offers fantastic views of the Basin, holiday apartments, water activities such as kayaking, canoeing and pedal boat power of great relaxation in this village as well as picnic and barbeque facilities in Lyons Park. You'll be surprised how after leaving HomeCo, Vincentia, you reach this wonderful destination in Erowal Bay.

Bay & Basin Buses Quick Trip 5 - (102 Scenic) St Georges Basin Village to Sanctuary Point Village

 

So, have we got you interested in catching any local buses around the Bay & Basin area or even the Shoalhaven area?

We seem to have the luxury of cars to take us around for the majority of our community, yet I feel if people would try our buses, they would understand we have reasonable fares of public transport to help us get to places.

*102 Scenic Bus from Nowra Coaches is my description of this bus service, signifying it is a slower bus service from Basin View to the Nowra/Bomaderry, compared to the 102X (Express from St Georges basin to Woollamia and the same as the 102 Nowra Coaches from Wollamia to Nowra/Bomaderry).

For a small time time table were rumming out at Shop Between The Flags, our Jervis Bay Tourist Information Centre. We thank both bus operators: Nowra Coaches and Shoal Bus for their co-operation in making sure that there is ample time tables

For a time, I believe Chris advised people were grabbing them like 'hot cakes'. So, now if you have your bus time table, you may want to get one for a neighbour, friend or family member that needs that information to catcj local buses around the area.

Bay & Basin Local Buses Taking You To Local Businesses & Main Hubs 'Quick Trips/Scenic Trips' - Quick Trip 1

About 2 months or so, I wanted to share my ideas on how why and where to catch our local buses.  I can answer these with visual effects, as I will be doing here.

Our local community is generally dependent on private transport with club buses and community buses as well as taxis around the area.

 Yet, I feel we all look at catching our local buses differently for reasons. I think, if I were to catch a bus, let me catch to Nowra (for shopping or appointments) or Bomaderry (to reach a connecting train). If we were to think a bit deeper, the local buses we have in the Bay & Basin are even as good as catching the buses locally and reaching your destinations locally within the Bay & Basin.

After recently travelling overseas and catching buses our costs of travelling on our local buses, are considerably lower and very compatible.

So, if we normally travel from example Basin View to Vincentia HomeCo by private car - how much is the cost of driving your car there. The rising cost of fuel is becoming expensive, registration, third party/comprehensive motor insurance, inclusive of regular maintenance & servicing. 

So, for a small cost of $2.50 Pensioner/Senior travel, I could travel all around the Nowra Bus Network. To make it easy where our buses start and let us down, I have produced a few videos to show what great bus services we have around the Bay & Basin area. Yes, the amount bus services can be increased and improved, but in time, for that to happen, we need to increase the local patronage of these services. To do that these videos are here to help each and every one of you decide to catch buses by yourself, with friends and even as a family.

This is one of many bus 'Quick Trips' you can take within our area, to get to places where you can get to work, do your basic shopping, get fit and meet families or friends for a social meeting. This bus service was less than 7 minutes with only one stop @ Erowal Bay.

My message to you all, a return trip is worth it. You're not paying for petrol. You're not driving. You're sitting in comfortable seats and could meet a group of friends and have a quick chat. You can organise your return trip on the same 102X (Express)* Bus service, within your own time back from Vincentia HomeCo. or return on the Scenic 102 (Scenic)* which will take you through Old Erowal Bay and parts of Sanctuary Point villages. Sanctuary Point Village Shopping Centre is the place to go as it provides all the necessities of essential goods and services, ( without going too far) and more. It offers the following shops: bakeries, coffee & beverage outlets, Australian Post, Chemist, Florists, and Real Estate Agents, bike shop, IGA, Jervis Bay Tourist Information and Shop, podiatrist, a couple of hair salons (why would you go elsewhere?), accountancy company, fish and chips/hamburgers, Indian and Chinese food as well as ample hot pizzas and many other shops for you to cater you needs. The Bay & Basin Library is at your service as well. Make sure you take the walk along "The Basin Walk' and enjoy Paradise Beach Reserve and P.alm Beach.

Homeco, Vicentia Village is a shopping Centre that offers major stores: Woolworths, Aldi, Simply Pharmacy, and Bakers Delight and complements itself with 2 coffee shops, a Medical Centre, Optometrists and other variety of wonderful shops. There is a walking track that you can take to reach Vicentia Shopping Village and the beaches along Jervis Bay. Most importantly, you can check on real-time applications like Anytrip.com, Tripview, Google Bus and Mooveit applications, current bus routes and bus services. Sometimes, we do not know how to connect to other buses in our NSW regional area? Bus Network maps are the best way of understanding how it all works.

Hail & Ride, Safely on Bay & Basin Buses

We have small wins for our Public Transport Bus community. This may be insignificant to some of our readers/bus commuters. Yet small changes mean a better change in the larger picture, which is definitely significant, to others.

The small win is here on the 'Hail & Ride' bus services. Both Bus Operators Nowra Coaches and Shoal Bus Services have got this policy in place, on their timetables. One of them is recently. Did you know about it?

This information will be updated in the future timetables from Nowra Coaches. Information on 'hail and ride' is listed below:

Hail & Ride

All bus services operate Hail & Ride. Please stand in a safe place for the bus to stop and signal the driver as the bus approaches. To exit the bus please tell the driver when you board where you would like to alight, and the driver will stop as close as possible to your desired location.

You must carry your pensioner concession entitlement card at all times as proof of entitlement when travelling with a concession card, or travelling in regional/rural NSW.  Digitalised copies are not accepted for discount.

So, I would like to personally 'Thank’ the Management of Nowra Coaches/Premier Motor Service for introducing 'Hail & Ride' on their timetables which you can obtain from their website or from Jervis Bay Tourist Information:

*Hail and Ride operate on all our services. All you need to do to catch the bus is to stand in a safe place and clearly signal the driver in a safe location for the bus to stop.

* This is not the Shoal Bus image on the timetables

Fares are set by Transport so any changes are out of our control, however as per the link to the fare prices I sent you, the current prices are effective until 31 December 2025.  We do not have the Opal system here so it would only impact passengers using the train service or people travelling in areas with Opal.

Goods News: Ticketing Prices Remain in Regional Bus Fares Until 31st December 2025

A few commuters ask how much the fares are to catch local buses around the Bay & Basin area. I knew little about it. By asking bus drivers and bus operators, I understand that the maximum an Adult fare can pay is $10.00 daily.

Red Ticket is not a Red Coloured Ticket. It stands for Regional Excursion Ticket, it will not be a 'Red' coloured ticket.

I also have obtained information from NSW IPART on Regional fares:

 A Statement from Nowra Coaches, 'Passengers can pay for a single use fare or a daily fare and it depends on the number of sectors travelled and whether they have any type of concession as to the cost.  Daily fares range from $2.50 to $5.00 for concession holders or $5.00 to $10 for a full adult fare.  These prices cover all areas on the 101/102/104/106 services however if they were travelling over 36 sectors (longest journey) then this cost would increase.  The $2.50 Red fares are also available to eligible passengers and this is a daily fare.'

The Good News our regional public transport fares are set until 31st December 2025. The Shoalhaven Bus Network does not operate under the Sydney Opal Card system. so the recent NSW Government announcement, would only affect commuters from catching trains from Bomaderry. This would be the same for the Shjoal Bus Service 134 and other bus services within the Shoalhaven Bus Network.

further research, I have confirmed from NSW IPART Note: Sections are an average of 1.6km over the total length of a bus route, but may vary between 1.3 km and 1.9 km.

For example, a trip from Sanctuary Point to St Georges Basin (one way) would cost a pensioner $1.60 and to Basin View $2.10.

Regional Excursion Daily (RED) Ticket

The RED ticket is a $2.50 all-day multi-ride ticket for use on all Nowra Coaches Services for people who hold a valid:

• Pensioner Concession Card issued by Centrelink or Department of Veterans Affairs.
• NSW and interstate Seniors Card
• NSW War Widow/ers Card

Local Bus Timetables Available At Tourist Information, Sanctuary Point

To help you understand our bus timetables, I have obtained local bus timetables from Nowra Coaches/Premier Motor Service. You will be able to receive (hard copies of) Nowra Coaches 102/ 102X, 104 Bus timetables and other timetables at 'Shop Between The Flags', Shop 1/2-18 Sanctuary Point Road, Sanctuary Point, during business hours.

Chris & Sharon Goldsmith are Ambassadors for Shoalhaven Tourism - therefore they will be able to assist you with the information required:

'Man' Transponders Required on Nowra Coaches Buses Immediately

I was surprised to wait for a bus at the designated timetable at HomeCo. Vincentia this week, on time - only to be told after I contacted the Nowra Coaches representative that the bus doesn't have transponders*, a few days ago.

I was advised by a Nowra Coaches Representative that 'Don't expect changes to happen too quickly if it is referred to NSW Transport'. As a former Public Transport advocate in the Western Sydney area of Mount Druitt, I disagree. Changes can happen, especially positive required changes.

Not fully equipped essential bus services should be complying to The NSW Transport Connected Program so that real-time trip applications be used by commuters properly. This places The Nowra Coach Bus Operator 'Behind the Times', when advised that changes will not happen so quickly.

Being advised the bus that was supposed to be on the timetable, no one can verify this because no transponders are installed on buses and no sightings of this service can be seen by commuters on software applications like anytrip.com.au or Tripview, etc. 

So, we will be asking for these transponders to be installed on 2 buses that were manufactured by 'Man', immediately to assist commuters understand the real-time provided by the software applications, available. The 2 Man buses were confirmed by another Nowra Coaches spokesperson that they don't have transponders. I have placed a 'Positive Feedback' to  Nowra Coaches to have these transponders upgraded on the 2 Man buses. I was advised, 'I may hear from the Manager if they wish to do so.'

I have also lodged feedback directly to NSW Transport to get a response and further action happening. My reference number is  01856452.

As of 28th July, I have been advised by a Nowra Coach spokesperson that the matter has been referred by the General Manager to NSW Transport. When asked who it was referred to - I was asked 'To contact 131500 and they will refer to the right person'.

So, I have contacted  131500 the feedback area and was advised that the information provided was not correct by the Nowra Coaches Spokesperson. So, I am now in the process of providing feedback to The NSW Transport, requesting the Officer that deals with this matter contact me within a matter of days.

You see, the 'Buses with no transponders issue' will be resolved sooner than was advised by another spokesperson at Nowra Coaches.

As a former Public Transport advocate for Mount Druitt and Western Sydney, I will ensure that improvements in public transport are completely updated in our region and keep you posted.

 A further update is I had spoken to a Nowra Coaches representative last Friday, chasing up on how the transponders bus situation is going on the 'Man' Buses. I was told that it has been referred to NSW Transport - when asked who they deal with at NSW Transport, I was asked to contact NSW Transport on 131500 and they will refer me to their contact. So I did that today, 

NSW Transport representative advised they cannot directly refer me to anyone in NSW Transport - unless I fill in a NSW Transport feedback form online and the response is 21 days. This was not explained by the Nowra Coaches Representative, so I have since spoken to another Nowra Coaches representative, who advised that this is the only contact number they have to contact NSW Transport for customer enquiries.

Then came the surprise. Nowra Coaches is addressing this matter and it is on their Agenda to fix up the new MAN Buses supplied, with transponders, although it may take a bit of time. We know from previous posts that 'anytrip application' which shows buses & trains in realtime is important to our community. If our local bus network doesn't have these transponders, we might as well throw away all the real-time applications available to us. 

My problem here is, how new are these MAN buses? You see Anytrip application, has been around for quite a while, so if these are new buses 'MAN' manufactured buses, how new are they?
