Get Ready this Summer: Prepare and Plan Early for Seasonal Hazards - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council is encouraging families, friends and neighbours to use the start of summer as the start of a conversation about being aware of and prepared for seasonal hazards. 

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor Amanda Findley said, “Aussie summers are iconic. They can also be tragic.”  

“Each year, communities across NSW experience bush fires, home fires, floods, storms, heat waves, power outages and other emergencies. The start of summer should be the start of a conversation around being prepared for the multiple hazards communities across NSW face.” 

Commissioner of Resilience NSW, Shane Fitzsimmons encouraged everyone to have a conversation around being prepared for an emergency, whatever the hazard may be. 

“Our emergency service organisations do an incredible job keeping us safe, but they can only do so much. Being aware and prepared is everyone’s responsibility, whether you’re at home, at work or away on holidays,” Commissioner Fitzsimmons said. 

“We want everyone to have safe and happy holidays. This year, that also means adapting our usual summer rituals to include COVID-Safe practice. Avoid crowded environments. Maintain physical distancing of 1.5m – about the length of a beach towel - and where physical distancing cannot be maintained, wear a mask. If you feel unwell, get tested and self-isolate."

Get Ready for summer now in five simple steps: 

1. Know your risk - think about the area you’re in and the types of disasters that could affect you; 

2. Plan now for what you will do - sit down and talk with your family and plan for what you will do if a disaster affects your area; 

3. Get your home ready - prepare your home by doing general home maintenance and checking your insurance coverage; 

4. Be aware - find out how to prepare, what to do if there is a disaster in your area and connect with NSW emergency services to stay informed;   

5. Look out for each other - share information with your family, friends, neighbours and those who may need assistance.

Help for Flood Affected in Bushfire Impacted Areas - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council has partnered with 'GIVIT' to ensure those impacted by the recent floods in bushfire impacted areas obtain the essential items and services they need.

GIVIT - Goods For Good Causes is an online, not-for-profit that coordinates the distribution of quality donated goods and services by connecting and inspiring an online network of givers.

Mayor Amanda Findley said, “Our hearts go out to those who have endured the fires and are now dealing with floodwaters and further damage to their properties.

“Council has been contacted by numerous people who want to help those impacted by the recent flooding. GIVIT is a great way to for those in need to access items and services that have been donated,” said Clr Findley.

Donated items such as tarps, tents, bedding, fans, dehumidifiers, and more can be accessed by logging details on the GIVIT website. To access donated support through GIVIT, you must first connect with a support organisation that is able to assess your needs. To find support organisations in your area that are already registered to use GIVIT, please go to givit.org.au/need-help/individuals.

If you have been impacted by the floods and are seeking assistance, please call Council's Recovery Hotline on 02 4429 5888. 

If you were directly impacted by the bushfires or floods, and need financial assistance, you can apply for a payment from the Shoalhaven City Council’s Mayor's Relief Fund by completing the application form available on Council’s website. Applications will be considered on a needs basis until the funds run out. 

Shoalhaven residents who are eligible for assistance from the Shoalhaven Mayor’s Relief Fund include full-time residents in the Shoalhaven (including renters), and whose home, infrastructure or outbuildings have been damaged or destroyed and tradespeople, including apprentices, who have had vehicles, equipment or tools damaged or destroyed.

John Fisher is one of 13 people who recently received a generator through GIVIT, following the fire damage to his property in Illaroo on 4 January.

Free Tipping of Flood-Damaged Debris - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council has waived disposal costs for flood-damaged debris effective immediately.

In support of the clean-up effort, waste caused by the floods in the Shoalhaven over the weekend can be disposed of free of charge at any Council facility until the close of business on Wednesday, 26 August 2020.

Residents will be required to sign a declaration at the waste depot that the waste disposed is a result of the floods of 8, 9 and 10 August. 

Council is also extending the opportunity to dispose of tree waste brought down by the damaging winds of 26/27 July. Free disposal of storm damaged tree waste will also require completion of a statutory declaration at the depot and must be disposed of by close of business 26 August.
