Please join us for the Living in Australia 2025: National Community Views Survey Key Insights Launch on Tuesday, 9 September 2025, from 12:30 p.m. (AEST).   Drawing on insights from our annually updated Living in Australia survey, this session will explore how we can better understand changing patterns of liveability and use this knowledge to make decisions today that help build stronger, more resilient and productive communities for the future. The webinar will: Report on Australia’s Overall Liveability Index for 2025, highlighting its decline over the past 12 months and showing where, why and for whom this has occurred. Explain what Australians believe makes somewhere a good place to live, how these attributes are experienced in local areas, how this relationship shapes overall liveability, and the priorities residents identify to advance quality of life. Take a deeper look at the four attributes Australians consistently say matter most – feeling safe, affordable decent housing, access to the natural environment and high quality health services. Explore how these are closely connected and share ideas from the community about how strengthening them together offers the greatest opportunity to advance quality of life. Explore how understanding local area demographics, population futures and economic characteristics provides additional context for how liveability is experienced and where improvements can be made.  The insights and data from Living in Australia provide spatial benchmarking for councils and other organisations that subscribe to .id’s Community Views Service.    Community Views uses a survey-based approach to inform, monitor and evaluate a diverse range of strategic planning and advocacy activities.   Feel free to forward this invitation to colleagues you think would find it of interest. National Anthem - Did you Realise there was a slight change a few years ago - I just picked it up

So the question arises, how did our National Anthem change just a few years ago and some people still get it a little wrong

So historically, 'God Save The Queen' was used when the British monarch was visiting Australia as a Royal Anthem.

'Advance Australia Fair National Anthem was composed by Scottish-born Composer Peter Dodds McCormick in November 1878 and was adopted as Australia's National Anthem on 9th April 1974. in 1976, God Save The Queen was re-instated as Australia's National Anthem. 

In 1977 the Australian Electoral Office conducted another poll, which again found ‘Advance Australia Fair’ was the preferred anthem (43.6 per cent), followed by ‘Waltzing Matilda (28.45 percent).

In 1981 the National Australia Day Council recommended the Australian National Anthem consist of verses one and two of ‘Advance Australia Fair’ with some modification.

On 19 April 1984 the then Governor-General, the Rt Hon Sir Ninian M Stephen KG AK GCMG GCVO KBE, proclaimed the Australian National Anthem to the tune of ‘Advance Australia Fair’ and the verses drafted by the National Australia Day Council. At the same time, ‘God Save The Queen’ was first proclaimed as the Royal Anthem.

From 1 January 2021, the words of the second line of the Australian National Anthem were amended from ‘For we are young and free’ to ‘For we are one and free’, by Proclamation made by the Governor General, General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), on the Government’s advice.

So, why change 'Young and free' to 'One and free' - The Scott Morrison Government recommended the change to Governor David Hurley and it was announced on 1st January 2021. Prime Minister Scott Morrison makes the announcement of the minor change that will help foster a ‘spirit of unity’.

I actually thought that we are not a young country any more!

This is an interesting article on  Australia's population increase post-COVID-19. We could always cater for more people, in our vast lands subject to maintaining conversation at the right level.

Maybe Others feel different to me. Immmigration can be a sticky subject, yet I feel lucky I am here because of my parents migrating here in Australia. What are your thoughts?

God Bless Australia! I Hope For Peace In The USA for These Times

Thank God, in Australia, we don't live currently in a complete anarchy country. Whilst we have a reasonable population in Australia and most of the population comes from natural and diverse backgrounds. We are living in relatively peaceful lives.

If we did have anarchy against any officials and government, we wouldn't be able to have our elected government members run the country, properly: there could be loss of possible deaths and creating multiple injuries. Not to mention the mental effects that may be brought on to individuals.

With what has happened with the death of George Floyd (Click here for details of store), all I can say is this:

I've always learnt that you cannot win by noisy and violent demonstrations that may make innocent people lose lives. My life experiences proves it.

You know I believe when people take to the streets and want to protest with what to them is wrong when it involves more human injury, accidents and eventually deaths, that when our reactions are wrong. In my case where I lived in Mount Druitt, over 10 years ago, we lost 3 major bus services. I was asked to be a community spokesperson in advocating in getting these vital services back to the heart of the community. Some local members of the community advised that the then NSW Government will not return bus services in Mount Druitt. We had an organised community meeting in the town square, I never wanted any demonstration, just for the people to be heard and we were heard. After 5,0000 petitions were completed and 6 ladies represented the area to the then NSW Minister of Transport, meetings with 30 important people around the Mount Druitt community, interviews with 2 local newspapers, The community got back 2 bus services out of 3. One of them was the major one 755 bus service. I always looked at peaceful constructive meetings that brought community results, back to the area. Politicians at first didn't like me - then I got asked to meet the Federal Member of Chifley, but due to work commitments, he met other community representatives. I was one of the original speakers at Sydney Alliance in Bowman Hall Blacktown. Other State & local politicians wanted to get to know me more. I believe in peaceful ways to change the community and even the world. I hope the rest of the world can grab onto the same idea.

Seeing how there in universal protests over one man that died and how he died in police custody (and shouldn't have died). This makes me think will the police officer involved and the other Police officers that they were with him, will they get their proper justice. 

Especially now, they are charged. It will be hard to have an unbiased jury panel.

And the flip side to the coin is:

Would there be a universal uproar on the death of retired black St Louis retired Captain David Dorn,  responding to an alarm at a Pawn Shop, during the riots? I would hope not. I would expect universal peaceful sympathy to him and his family, as he was doing his duty.

Update on Coronavirus COVID-19 from the Prime Minister of Australia - Hon. Scott Morrison

The last few months have given us a reminder of the things that are really important.

Our health and wellbeing. A strong health system. A growing economy.

Our jobs. Our children’s education. Caring for our elderly.

The selfless service of everyday Australians. Above all, supporting each other.

Australia has shown how we can meet our challenges and pull together.

We have been fighting the virus and we are winning.

We are delivering economic lifelines, including JobKeeper and JobSeeker.

We have strengthened our health system and put protections in place – with more testing and contact tracing, more ICU beds, more ventilators and more personal protective equipment.

Yesterday, the National Cabinet outlined a three step plan for a COVID safe Australia.

Step one enables greater connection to family and friends. This can include: 

• Five visitors at home.
• Gatherings of up to 10 people.
• Some restaurants and cafes can begin reopening.
• Libraries, community centres, playgrounds and boot camps open.
• Local and regional travel. 

Step two enables gatherings of up to 20 people. It is likely to include more retailers being open, along with gyms, beauty parlours, cinemas, galleries, amusement parks and caravan and camping grounds and some interstate travel.

Step three enables gatherings of up to 100 people. It will likely mean a return to work for most workers, a resumption of interstate travel and the opening of pubs and clubs, with some restrictions.

States will move through these steps at different times and make different decisions based on their local conditions. National Cabinet will review the steps every three weeks.

However, at this stage it is our aspiration that in July, we will have moved through these steps.

Treasury estimates these steps could see around 850,000 jobs restored in the months ahead.

There will be risks, there will be challenges, there will be outbreaks, there will be setbacks.

However, we cannot allow our fear of going backwards, to stop us going forwards.

A year ago I made a promise to all Australians, that we would work to keep our economy strong, keep Australians safe and keep Australians together.

That’s the fight we’ve been in and the fight we’ll win together.

3rd Update On Statistics And Comments Of Coronavirus COVID-19 From Raul Arregui's Face Book Page

Australia - at current trend, Australia could reach 10,000 cases by day "33" (Apr 12th); while mortality rate continues low (could reach 50 deaths by day "35" - Apr 14th) - Total recovered cases remained unchanged as 585; while severe cases increased to 85 from 50 (70% increase)

Argentina - at current trend, Argentina could reach 4000 cases by day "32" (Apr 21st); mortality rate remains as previously (could reach 200 deaths by day "35" - Apr 24th) - Total recovered cases increased to 266 from 256 (4%); no severe cases reported to the wHO

USA - discovered cause of data gap, USA reports 48 hrs old data to WHO to include in world reports; so instead of treating the gap as one (24 hrs) day jump I corrected my model and spread it into two (48 hrs) days equally. That has corrected the trend predictor. With the new model, USA number of cases could reach 1,000,000 cases by day "47" (Apr 19th) ; mortality rate shows a steep climb and at current trend USA could pass Italy by day "35" (Apr 7th), and could reach 50,000 deaths by day "47" (Apr 19th) - Total recovered cases increased to 12,044 from 10,403 (16% increase); severe cases increased to 5787 from 5421 (7% increase)
