Story Factory Update

Hi John

We are incredibly excited to announce our inaugural Ambassador program! We welcome author and journalist Julia Baird; author, screenwriter and journalist Benjamin Law; actress and musician Zindzi Okenyo; novelist, screenwriter and playwright Debra Oswald; academic and author Dr Amy Thunig-McGregor; and writer and comedian Jennifer Wong.

These talented and passionate creatives bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our organisation, and also reflect the diversity and life experiences of the young people we work with.

The Ambassadors’ deep connection to our work will no doubt resonate with many of our readers. “The art and skill of storytelling is one which can help you to better understand yourself, your community, history and family," said Amy Thunig-McGregor. "It can also provide the platform and worlds needed to be able to dream, plot and plan big for your futures! Who wouldn’t want more of that in our schools and communities!”

Learn more about our Ambassadors and what being an Ambassador for Story Factory means to them.

Onwards,

INTRODUCING MEGAFAUNA CORNER FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL CLASSROOMS

Our Story Factory Digital team has been digging up exciting creative writing lessons about Australia's fossilised megafauna! We have just launched Megafauna Corner: a three-part series of free educational videos for primary school classrooms.

Join Jerry, Professor Marcozovich, and Lady Kirst (AKA our Storytellers Jerry, Marcus and Kirsty) as they travel through time to discover Australia’s megafauna and inspire primary school students to write about their own imagined animals.

OUR SPRING SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMS

Bookings for our free Spring school holiday workshops (8-9 October 2025) are now open! From stepping into a spooky world of poetry to engaging with text by a contemporary African American music writer, there are different workshop options for primary and high school students, either in-person at our Parramatta centre or online.

OUR TERM 4 AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

We are also taking bookings for our free Term 4 After-school programs! Like our holiday offering, we have different workshops for primary and high school students, as well as in-person and online options. Among older favourites, we’re introducing a new workshop called ‘scifaiku’ where students will transform haiku poems into science fiction versions!

IN THE MEDIA

In an article for The South Sydney Herald, we sat down with Year 9 student Heidi Jessop from Toongabbie, just after she submitted her manuscript for our Year of the Novella program.

Titled Viewpoints, Heidi’s novella questions whether heroes and villains are who we really think they are. Stay tuned for December when we will publish Viewpoints and all of the incredible novellas.

I have been sitting like this – hunched over for almost fifteen minutes.

That’s okay though. My patience could last me eons, just for this chance to prove myself, my theory, and make my way upwards.

The screens pause, a blinking wonder of dots and dashes. My fingers freeze in midair, and I hold my breath.

The blue light stops. For a moment I’m surrounded by the darkness – my eyes must be shining, I’m so excited. The lights flash back on, and I press play.

Support more fantastic young people to find their voice and write their stories!

We at Story Factory acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we live and work. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and acknowledge them as the cultural knowledge holders of stories and culture. We celebrate these stories and commit to continuing to support the voices of future storytellers and future generations.
