Western Sydney Community Forum has joined with the Refugee Council of Australia to advocate for people seeking asylum and other temporary visa holders in Australia who have been adversely affected by COVID-19.
We are reaching out to see if you are able to assist with the campaign by connecting people adversely affected by COVID-19 with the Refugee Council of Australia to share their stories via the media.
The civil society campaign is called #NobodyLeftBehind.
So far, 188 organisations have signed an open letter to call on Prime Minister Scott Morrison to support temporary visa holders. It is an amazing show of support to highlight that everyone should have access to Medicare, income support if they can’t find work, and a valid visa to ensure they maintain legal status and access to basic rights, and we are all working hard to achieve this.

The Refugee Council of Australia are in the process of pursuing high profile mainstream media to shine a light on the current situation, with a focus on the public health and economic implications of the government not supporting people. They are lining up a range of stories to ensure that these issues cannot be ignored, focused directly on the experiences of people who are living without the critical support many people have. We are reaching out to see if you might know someone who would speak to the media about their experience.
The Refugee Council of Australia will provide extensive support as well as independent legal advice for all spokespeople, and the option to remain anonymous may be possible.
At this stage they are looking in particular, for people seeking asylum who were working previously and have lost their job as a result of COVID-19 and are struggling without support from the government.
