Help to Prevent Falls Did you know 1 in 3 people over the age of 65 fall each year? A fall can lead to injury, loss of confidence and reduced independence.
Here are five easy steps you can take to help keep fit, active and reduce your risk of falling:
- Do exercises that challenge your balance. Try these simple exercise circuits or join a falls prevention program or balance exercise class in your local area.
- Look after your feet by wearing shoes that are appropriate and suit the activities you do. Have regular podiatry checks to reduce foot problems.
- Get your eyes checked by an optometrist every two years, as our eyes change as we get older making it harder to see or adjust to light.
- Improve safety in and around your home by having good lighting, keeping walkways and corridors clear, checking that mats and rugs are secure, and installing grab rails near steps and in the bathroom.
- Have regular check-ups with your doctor or health professional to help ensure your medical conditions are being managed.

Low Cost Ways to Eat More Healthily Shopping for ingredients to prepare food at home can make healthy eating easier and save you money. Here are some top tips to help you shop smart and shop healthy: - Plan your meals and write a shopping list. This can also help you waste less food, by only buying what you need.
- Switch between stores and make the most of their weekly specials to cut costs. Bulk-buy items that you use a lot, and have the right storage for, when they are on sale.
- Buying ‘imperfect’ produce (fruit and vegetables) can be cheaper. This produce is still good quality, it may just look odd.
- When buying packaged food, like breakfast cereal, dairy products and canned foods, use the nutrition information panel or the Health Star Rating to select healthier options.
- Use frozen and canned fruit and vegetables. They can be just as healthy as fresh and are good to have on hand to add to meals and snacks.
