I believe Australia is a miracle. We live in a nation built through sacrifice, courage, and an ability to create prosperity and opportunity when the odds are stacked against us.  A country where families can raise children in safety, where opportunity is there for those who take it, and where you can live in freedom. First up this week, there was a big change in the National Party with my friend and colleague, Senator Matt Canavan, winning the trust of his party room and becoming leader. My congratulations to Matt, who I know will fight the good fight for our country – especially on pushing back against the absurdity of net zero. I also extend my best wishes and thanks to David Littleproud after he stepped down from leadership. David is staying on to serve his electorate, and I have no doubt he’ll have plenty more to contribute in the future. That makes for a lot of change in the Coalition recently. But in my new role as Shadow Minister for Small Business, Skills and Training, I’m focused on what drives our economy. And calling out the harm Labor is doing. Small businesses are the forgotten heroes of our economy under Labor. They are run by the people who take risks, build wealth and opportunity, and energise our economy. When I say small businesses are the engine of our economy, in some ways that’s literally true. Across the country, family-run shops, local tradespeople, cafés, farms, and small enterprises form the backbone of our communities. These businesses are built by Australians. Owners work long hours and invest in their local communities. Together, they employ millions of Australians, train apprentices, and keep towns and suburbs alive with opportunity. Despite what those in Labor think, you don’t get real economic growth by bloating the public service in Canberra. You don’t get real economic growth by adding taxes and regulations to existing industries. You don’t get real economic growth by lining the pockets of big unions with government contracts. You grow the economy through the enterprise and initiative of the ordinary Australians who build a small business. Angus Taylor gets it. As he says, bigger government hasn’t meant better government, or a better Australia. Angus wants better government which puts faith back in Australians and gets off their backs – allowing them the freedom to flourish again. I’ve visited many small businesses in the Territory and across Australia both in my new role and over the last few years as a Senator. Things are tough out there. Small business owners tell me they want a fair go, a stable economy, and a government that understands the realities of running a business. Backing small business means backing Australian families and local communities. It means reducing unnecessary red tape, getting energy prices down, supporting entrepreneurship, and restoring the conditions in which businesses can grow and thrive again. If we want a stronger and more resilient Australia, we must recognise the vital role small businesses play. And I am determined to make sure they have the support they need to succeed. This week, the Senate debated the Government’s annual “Closing the Gap” report. This is the update on where Indigenous Australians are falling behind- or catching up to- non-Indigenous Australians on a range of socio-economic measures. The picture, as it has been for a long time, was not promising. But once again, the government promises to do better – usually by spending more money on activist groups who have already failed multiple times. I’ve had enough. I stood up in the Senate and used my position for what it’s good for: telling hard truths. The reality is, after Kevin Rudd’s National Apology to the Stolen Generations, Indigenous policy is still stuck in “sorry” mode. I believe it’s time for something beyond remembering the apology each year. I believe it’s time for Indigenous forgiveness. No one alive today is responsible for the sins of the past. Our children and grandchildren, in particular, should not be saddled with guilt. This doesn’t mean forgetting the past or failing to learn the lessons of past mistakes. It means no longer being a prisoner of the past. But that hasn’t happened because it’s bad business for the inner-city activists who are pushing for reparations and segregation. We also need to accept the truth that many Aboriginal people are not disadvantaged at all. Many have thrived and prospered under the Australian system. Race does not define disadvantage. Everyone, even Indigenous people, has individual agency. And that leads to another hard truth: There are aspects of Indigenous culture that are damaging and dangerous. Regressive attitudes towards women – and acceptance of violence – are parts of traditional culture that are still present today and that Labor refuses to acknowledge. And until they do so, and do so seriously, the gap will never close. We also need to have much higher expectations of Indigenous people. There is still an attitude of paternalism that means many Indigenous people are still unable to take full economic advantage of native title land. The fixation on victimhood and past wrongs needs to be done away with. We must give Indigenous Australians the individual agency that all humans crave. As masters of their fate and captains of their souls, many more Indigenous Australians in remote and regional parts of Australia will start new ventures, join new enterprises, and unlock multigenerational wealth. Their success, or their failure, will be up to them. That’s how it should be for everybody. If we want to “Close the Gap”, it’s time to stop ring-fencing people based on race. Susan Hey - Liberal Party Update

 

In the national interest, the Liberal Party has worked to fix legislation that the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, and his government fundamentally failed to get right.   For more than two years, the Albanese Government failed to confront the rising tide of antisemitism and failed to keep Australians safe.   That failure was exposed by the worst terrorist attack on Australian soil and, when leadership was required, the Prime Minister did not provide it.   Instead, Labor produced a clumsy and deeply flawed package of laws that collapsed under scrutiny, divided the Parliament and risked encroaching on fundamental freedoms.   As a result of our action, the legislation has been strengthened and properly focused on keeping Australians safe.   The key changes secured by the Liberal Party narrow the legislative focus to combatting antisemitism and radical Islamist extremism by: Ensuring aggravated offences capture radical Islamist extremist preachers and leaders, including visiting speakers. Strengthening the role of Parliament in examining these powers, including mandatory two-year reviews by the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security to ensure the new powers are effective, proportionate and accountable. Making the Prohibited Hate Groups Listing Framework more targeted to the most dangerous hate groups seeking to incite violence. Ensuring the laws are directed at serious criminal conduct that impacts national security, not at free speech. Requiring consultation with the Leader of the Opposition on both the listing and delisting of extremist organisations. Closing gaps in hate crime definitions so Commonwealth offences are properly covered, and ensuring only the most serious state and territory legislation can be used to prescribe groups. Ensuring migration powers are used decisively to remove extremists who threaten community safety. These changes strengthen the law, close loopholes, and restore clarity and accountability.   The Liberal Party will always strongly defend freedom of thought, freedom of worship and freedom of speech.   Those freedoms define who we are as a nation, and they must be defended even when the task before us is to confront hatred and extremism.   As a direct result of the Liberal Party’s stand, Labor’s attempt to criminalise free speech is no more.   The Liberal Party will always act to keep Australians safe, defend freedoms and put the national interest first.
