Hello,
Many of you would have driven over the fabulous new Jervis Bay Flyover which is now open, making driving on the Princes Highway safer and bringing an end to bottlenecks at the Princes Highway and Jervis Bay Road intersection.
I’m so proud to have secured and delivered $100 million funding towards this really important infrastructure project for our region, and was pleased that the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited to officially cut the ribbon and thank community members and the 110 workers who have worked on the flyover.
In other news, of course, the Federal Budget is delivering more tax cuts and reforming how capital gains tax and negative gearing work to help get new homeowners into the market. This is so important for our coastal region, where cashed-up property investors are locking young people – our kids and grandkids - out of the local market.
It’s fantastic that we’re making Medicare Urgent Care Clinics a permanent feature of our health system, with more than 3,100 presentations at the new Nowra UCC since the doors opened, and almost 29,000 presentations at the Batemans Bay clinic. This is having a significant impact for our region, with pressure taken off our hospitals and free, walk-in urgent care for residents and visitors.
The Budget also includes a $25 billion Commonwealth investment in public hospitals, which will flow through to local hospitals in the Shoalhaven and Eurobodalla.
Importantly, the Budget provides relief for small businesses – the backbone of our region’s economy.
While it’s been a busy time in Canberra working on these changes, I’ve also enjoyed getting out into the community attending the always wonderful Berry Celtic Fair, celebrating 100 years of Scouting with the Batemans Bay Scout group and joining with the Nowra RSL Sub-Branch for the Boer War Remembrance Service.
It’s always fantastic to celebrate the achievements of our local life savers, so it was great to attend the Kiama Surf Life Saving club presentation where Pete Gallagher was announced the volunteer of the year – Congrats Peter!
In Batemans Bay I was inspired by the creative works on show as part of the Sculpture for Clyde exhibition and I also took the chance to get out and enjoy our local beaches and bushland with my fur-baby Taj and caught up with so many locals along the way.
This week I’m in Queensland chairing the Standing Committee on Regional Development, Infrastructure and Transport’s hearings as part of the inquiry into local government funding.
This is so important, especially for regional councils, to better understand the funding challenges faced by local government, particularly those that provide services and infrastructure to regional and rural Australians.
I’m looking forward to being home this weekend and getting out and about in the community. I hope to see you around!

 | SPEECH: Thank you to our emergency relief organisations Mrs PHILLIPS (Gilmore) (19:44): As we move into the colder months, I know that families across my electorate of Gilmore are facing increased cost-of-living pressures, and many people are trying to cope with housing stress, mental health challenges and, in some cases, the impacts of domestic violence. During winter, demand for assistance from our emergency relief services rises sharply, with energy costs, and many households are forced to make very difficult choices between heating their homes or meeting other basic needs. For some, this time of year brings real and immediate anxiety. That's why wonderful organisations like St Vincent de Paul are so important. | SPEECH: Opening the door to more housing for young people Mrs PHILLIPS (Gilmore) (15:51): If you work hard and save hard, you should be able to purchase your own first home. But, sadly, for young people in my electorate of Gilmore on the picturesque New South Wales South Coast, the dream of buying their first home locally has been unattainable for years. First home buyers just can't compete with investors who are paying top dollar for homes in our popular beachside towns, lakeside hamlets and quaint historic villages. Our kids and grandkids are being forced to pull up roots and move away from the communities they love and grew up in. We know investors have a huge advantage over first home buyers. They have an unfair tax advantage, and we want to fix that. The Albanese Labor government is making bold changes to help young Australians get a foot in the door of the property market. | SPEECH: Jervis Bay Flyover ribbon cutting Mrs PHILLIPS (Gilmore) (16:20): Friday was a fantastic day in my electorate, with the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, joining me and local state MPs to cut the ribbon on the long-awaited Jervis Bay flyover. This is the busiest intersection on the Princes Highway from Nowra to the Victorian border, and drivers have experienced a major bottleneck there for decades. I'm proud to have lobbied alongside the bay and basin community to secure $100 million in federal funding for this important infrastructure project, and I'm excited to announce the first cars will drive over it next Monday. | SPEECH: 12 months delivering for the Gilmore community Mrs PHILLIPS (Gilmore) (09:46): Well, it's been just over a year since I was re-elected by my community in Gilmore as their representative here in the federal parliament. Over the past 12 months, I'm so proud of what the Albanese Labor government has delivered for my region, including a new Medicare urgent care clinic in Nowra, which has seen more than 2,000 people in the first two months of operation. We've also announced that a Seahawk helicopter, AKA Nowra's 'chopper on a stick', will be returning to the town's gateway after being selected as the preferred option by community vote. Next week, the impressive and long awaited Jervis Bay flyover will be open to traffic, marking a significant milestone in the upgrade of the Princes Highway on the New South Wales South Coast. One of the most critical projects now under way in the Shoalhaven is the provision of transitional housing for women and children escaping family and domestic violence, delivered by SASSI and supported by the Albanese Labor government's Housing Australia Future Fund Crisis and Transitional Program.
