Gilmore News - Hon. Fiona Phillips Federal MP for Gilmore

Federal Parliament is back in full swing, and I’ve been delighted to speak about our Cheaper Household Battery Program, Cheaper Medicines and to give my Address in Reply to the Governor-General’s speech to start the 48th Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia.

You can watch and read my speeches below.

I was pleased to meet with a Dolphin Point homeowner with the Minister for Energy and Climate Change on Friday to hear about his decision to install 40 solar panels and how his cheaper home battery would save him money while also helping the environment.

I popped into Bomaderry High School to encourage students to write a speech for parliament about an issue that matters to them in the Raise Our Voice competition, and joined members of the Kiama Jamberoo RSL Sub-Branch to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day.

It was great to cut the ribbon at the new Street Side Medics mobile clinic that visits the Shoalhaven Homeless Hub every Tuesday, and my team and I donned yellow to raise funds for the Cancer Council on Daffodil Day.

It’s always fantastic to get out and about in the community and I enjoyed visiting the Sussex Inlet Marine Rescue Unit and the Rally for Recovery op-shop at Tomakin to announce their successful Stronger Communities grants.

I joined members of the Mollymook Beach Probus Club for their 25th birthday celebrations, and one of the most colourful and vibrant evenings I’ve experienced for a long time was joining members of our local Nepalese community for their Teej celebration. You may have seen me on Win TV dancing with all the ladies in red!

I’m looking forward to being home for the weekend before heading back to represent you in parliament next week.

Fiona Phillips invites students to ‘bring their voice to the table’

Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips is providing students in the electorate with an opportunity to have their say in Federal Parliament.

The annual Raise Our Voice in Parliament campaign shines a unique spotlight on the diverse voices, views, and opinions of Australia’s young people who possess invaluable insights but are often overlooked in political and policy debates.

Last year’s Gilmore winner, Bomaderry High School student Vihan Patel, wrote about flooding issues around his home, and suggested creating rain gardens as a solution to the problem.

Gilmore tops the state for household solar batteries

People in Gilmore have installed more solar batteries in the last seven weeks than any other electorate in the state.

Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips said she was thrilled that South Coast householders were embracing the Commonwealth Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

“It shows that people in Gilmore are really switched on when it comes to the transition to renewable energy,” Mrs Phillips said.

“I’m so please that we’ve topped the state, and we’re number seven in Australia for solar battery installations – how awesome is that!”

Stronger Communities Grants provide a boost for nine Gilmore groups

The Sussex Inlet Marine Rescue NSW unit is one of nine community organisations across Gilmore that will share in more than $112,000 in grants as part of the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme.

Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips has delivered a $17,962 grant to Sussex Inlet Marine Rescue to upgrade its radio room.

“The grant will allow the aging radio room to be re-fitted and radios, computers and phones to be replaced with current, state-of-the art communications equipment,” Mrs Phillips said after visiting the unit on Monday.

“With an influx of new members, and existing members keen to become radio operators, it is vital that the service has a dedicated space and equipment that is fit for purpose.

Federal grant for new Eurobodalla Rally For Recovery shed

Volunteers and visitors to Tomakin’s Rally For Recovery op-shop will soon enjoy a new accessible shed, thanks to a $18,500 grant from the Albanese Labor Government’s Stronger Communities Programme.

During a visit to the region, Federal Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Senator Jenny McAllister, and Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips dropped into the shed today (Thursday 14 August) to congratulate the volunteers.

The funding boost will upgrade the Rally For Recovery facility to make it accessible for the volunteers who have raised more than $4 million for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation (SCHF), as well as visitors.

The grant is one of nine that have been awarded to organisations across Gilmore for infrastructure projects that deliver social benefits for local communities.

SPEECH: Cost of Living - Cheaper Solar Batteries

When it comes to cutting their power bills and helping the environment, the people in my electorate on the New South Wales South Coast are really switched on—people like Michael at Dolphin Point, who I visited on Friday with the Minister for Climate Change and Energy.

A former banana farmer, Michael recently retired to the South Coast, bought a cute beach cottage and has just installed 40 solar panels and a solar battery. Michael said he was thrilled to have saved 30 per cent as part of the Albanese Labor government's new Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which kicked in on 1 July, and he is about to buy an electric vehicle which he will also charge using his home battery….

SPEECH: Supporting Cheaper Medicines

Cheaper medicines are literally saving lives. Cheaper medicines mean Australians doing it tough don't have to choose between filling their shopping cart, filling up their petrol tank and filling a script.

The plan to make cheaper medicines even cheaper is a tangible cost-of-living measure being delivered by the Albanese Labor government. We are delivering cheaper medicines for all Australians because the size of your bank balance shouldn't determine the quality of your health care….

GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S SPEECH: Address-in-Reply

As the re-elected member for Gilmore, I am honoured to give this address-in-reply to the Governor-General's speech to start the 48th Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia. I want to start by thanking the people of Gilmore, on the South Coast of New South Wales, for re-electing me as your representative in the Australian parliament and for the privilege of fighting for you every single day.

I am so thankful to have been first elected in 2019, then in 2022 and now in 2025. It is not something that I take for granted any single day. I have relished the opportunity to stand up for people and fight for more services, roads and community infrastructure….
