Slow Down, Kids Around these School Holidays  - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

21 December 2021

Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation and Shoalhaven City Council join forces again, raising awareness to reduce child pedestrian injuries and fatalities across the  City.

Motorists will again notice the ‘Holiday Time; Slow Down, Kids Around’ signs  across the city, at beaches, parks and other busy recreational locations, urging people to slow down and take extra care on our roads during the holiday period.

Shoalhaven City Council Director, Paul Keech said with COVID restrictions eased, Shoalhaven will have more families visiting in the school holiday periods, and the number of kids using local roads and paths will increase significantly.

“With more kids around this holiday season, it is important for all motorists to stay aware and vigilant, as children can react impulsively and forget about road safety.

“That is why the ‘Holiday Time, Slow Down, Kids Around ‘campaign is so important. It is a timely reminder about the importance of road safety, for residents and visitors and the need to be acutely aware of the increase in pedestrian activity. Drivers, parents and carers need to recognise the potential danger in busy holiday spots and take extra precautions to ensure our kids are kept safe,” Mr Keech said.

Michelle and David McLaughlin founded Little Blue Dinosaur in honour of their son Tom. They now channel their energy into making school holidays safer for children.

"We lost our precious son, Tom in the blink of an eye. We do not want this to happen to anyone else. That is why the 'Holiday Time, Slow Down, Kids Around' message is so important," Ms McLaughlin said.

“Families and their children are often not familiar with their holiday locations and key visual roadway differences, including lack of kerbs/guttering and no line markings or footpaths.

Little Blue Dinosaur is excited to be working with Shoalhaven City Council. The campaign is now operating in 25 local Government areas, across four States in Australia,” she said.
