Young Archie Competition Comes to the Shoalhaven - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council Media Release

21 July 2021

Shoalhaven Regional Gallery are excited to announce the Shoalhaven Young Archie Competition. In partnership with the Art Gallery of NSW and Presenting Partner ANZ, Shoalhaven Regional Gallery are seeking entries for the Young Archie Awards ahead of the Archibald Prize 2020 Regional Tour which goes on display at the Gallery in September.

The Art Gallery of NSW’s Young Archie competition began in 2013 and is an annual competition for children aged 5 to 18 years, with prizes provided by ANZ. Young artists are encouraged to submit an artwork of someone who is important in their life. The judges request, if possible, the portrait is ‘painted from life’ and that your subject has a sitting for their portrait, like with the Archibald Prize, this also includes a virtual sitting.

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor Amanda Findley is excited to see the Regional Gallery launch a local Young Archie competition and host such a prestigious exhibition.

“The Shoalhaven Young Archie Competition is fantastic for our aspiring young artists”, Clr Findley said.

“The competition will provide an opportunity for local artists to showcase their talents to the community alongside the touring Archibald Prize exhibition, which will be on display during September”, Clr Findley said.

“I encourage all artist from the ages of five to eighteen, to put their creative hats on and submit an entry for the Shoalhaven’s first Young Archie competition,” Clr Findley said.

The Shoalhaven Regional Art Gallery will be accepting submissions online until Sunday 15 August 2021.

The Archibald Prize 2020 Regional Tour exhibition will be on display at the Gallery from 4 September 2021 until 16 October 2021.
