School Creek Bridge Opening - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Shoalhaven City Council Media Release

1 October 2020

Today Shoalhaven City Council celebrated the official opening of the new and improved School Creek Bridge to residents of Budgong.

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor Amanda Findley said motorists were beginning to experience the benefits of the $675,000 upgrade that was completed in mid- September.

“I am pleased to see the completion of the School Creek Bridge after its destruction in last summer’s fires.

“Council's main priority on the project was to work as quickly as possible to rebuild infrastructure damaged by the fires with more fire resilient replacements which have taken time to secure funding, finalise tenders and arrange contracts”, said Clr Findley said.

“I’m delighted to see Budgong residents now using the high-quality concrete bridge to access other parts of the Shoalhaven like Nowra or Kangaroo Valley. Previously without a bridge, the journey would take an hour by car”, said Clr Findley.

The bridge had to be rebuilt after the Currowan fire went through in January, leaving only the concrete piers remaining and destroying access for residents.

The bridge has been constructed with pre-fabricated bridge decks, prepared in Newcastle. All businesses and workers involved in the reconstruction, earthworks and cranage of the project were local or regional NSW-based businesses.

The replacement of the bridge over School Creek on Bugong Road is the last of the four destroyed bridges in the Shoalhaven to be replaced as a result of the Currowan fire, and just one of the significant achievements of Council and its Recovery Committee.
