Moderate Flood Warning for the Shoalhaven River
at Nowra and Terara

RENEWED MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE AT NOWRA AND TERARA OVERNIGHT THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY
Rainfall has eased in the catchment since around midnight Wednesday into Thursday. Minor flooding is continuing at Nowra and Terara.
The Tallowa Dam is spilling. Further moderate rainfall forecast for the rest of Thursday combined with abnormally high tides could cause renewed river level rises to the moderate flood level at Nowra and Terara.
A Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall is current for the Metropolitan, Illawarra and parts of Mid North Coast, Hunter and Central Tablelands Forecast Districts. Another Severe Weather Warning is current for abnormally high tides and damaging surf for parts of the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra and South Coast Forecast Districts.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of the Hunter, Central Coast and Greater Sydney.
Shoalhaven River:
Minor flooding is occurring along the Shoalhaven River.
The Shoalhaven River at Nowra (AHD) peaked at 3.21 metres around 02:00 am Thursday and is currently at 3.01 metres and falling with minor flooding. Renewed rises to the moderate flood level are possible overnight Thursday into Friday.
The Shoalhaven River at Terara peaked at 3.12 metres around 03:00 am Thursday and is currently at 2.89 metres and falling with minor flooding. Renewed rises to the moderate flood level are possible overnight Thursday into Friday.
Flood Safety Advice:
In life threatening emergencies, call 000 (triple zero) immediately. If you require rescue, assistance to evacuate or other emergency help, ring NSW SES on 132 500.
- * Avoid drowning. Stay out of rising water, seek refuge in the highest available place.
- * Prevent damage to your vehicle. Move it under cover, away from areas likely to flood.
- * Avoid being swept away. Stay out of fast-flowing creeks and storm drains.
- * Never drive, ride or walk through flood water. Flood water can be deceptive and dangerous.

Shoalhaven River Entrance Update - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Council staff inspected the site at Shoalhaven Heads to assess the entrance and to determine if additional excavation works needed to be undertaken, if safe to do so. The east coast low-influenced wave intensities experienced overnight, and tidal inundations has caused sand to be deposited in the pilot channel that was formed yesterday.
From this inspection, it was deemed unsafe to operate machinery to attempt to move further sand on the beachside of the pilot channel. Safety hazards associated with these works could not be appropriately mitigated, due to the presence of extreme wave conditions and no access and egress points if a duress situation eventuated.
It is understood that floodwaters have entered the pilot channel excavated yesterday but have been unable to flow fully through to the sea as the berm on the ocean side has been influenced by wave action and wave runup that occurred overnight.
The water level at the entrance is currently 2.03 metres AHD (at 9:30 am), which is above the trigger level - 2.0 metres AHD. The water level at Nowra is 3.07 metres, which is also above the trigger level – 3.0 metres AHD.
Council staff will continue to monitor real-time data from the flood level gauges on a frequent basis throughout the day to make immediate and informed decisions if the system does not open naturally.
Kangaroo Valley Road is Closed to residents only - Shoalhaven City Council - Media Release

Kangaroo Valley Road is closed between Bundewallah Rd, Berry and Moss Vale Road from Tuesday afternoon (2 March 2022) due to safety concerns for motorists.
Residents of Kangaroo Valley only may use the road with caution by showing traffic controllers their proof of address (drivers’ licence).
Residents can be assured emergency vehicles will also have access to the village.
Wattamolla Rd is also closed. Local resident access is available by showing their drivers’ licence to Traffic controllers on Woodhill Mountain Rd near Broughton Vale Rd.
Motorists travelling to Kangaroo Valley should expect delays and plan as there is currently no alternative route.
With further storm activity predicted in the coming days, residents are advised to drive to the conditions and avoid unnecessary travel through the areas above.
